Noisy Power Steering Pump

I know this has been aired before, BUT my symptoms are, I think slightly different. Went out to fire up my 86 944 Lux today and noticed that if I moved the steering wheel at all, the power steering pump seemed to groan like mad. However, after a few minutes, the symptoms had vanished and all seems ok (though I haven't actually driven her). I was wondering if the cold weather had shrunk the power steering pump pulley just enough to make it slip and therefore once it had warmed up a bit, it would therefore expand and the pump would wrk properly. Any thoughts? I should say that up to now the car has been faultless. Your views/advice would be much appreciated. AndyB

Mine does this too when it is properly cold. During the summer months this doesn't happen. My pump has a slight leak from around a washer but other than works just fine. Couple of seconds into a drive and the noise goes away.

This is very common, in varying degrees, on the 944. It does not seem to cause any acute problems in itself, beyond the embarrassing noise. It sounds like belt slip, and could be belt slip, of course, so that is worth a check, but don;t be surprised if it makes a similar niose even with the belt set up just right. A lot of cars, including mine, will do it from time to time.
A change of power steering fluid may well help if it has not been done for a while, and will also make the steering feel nicer. Mine is a lot less likely to make the noise since changing the fluid but there is still the occasional little groan. A PAS pump rebuild is probably the ultimate cure.

New seals in the pump and fresh power steering fluid sorted mine out. Never hear a whimper out of it now till it needs a top up [:)]

Most power steering pumps are vane pumps and the loss of performance in a vane pump is usually due to the tips of the vanes wearing out. If you want to be really daring and escape from the relatives over xmas, you could retire to the shed and get it stripped down!
