noisy/rattle gear knob 944S

ive read the bit in F.A.Q. but dont think this is the same
it sounds as if its the plastic gear knob itself.
it rattles on cold tick over and is worse when you start to get up in the rev range whilst moving.
is it easy to take the knob off, im guessing that it dosnt twist off, and i have felt though the gatter that theres some type of join there.
the gear change it self feels good, not sloopy and loose, it just has this very plastic sounding rattle

Separate the gaiter from the console surround (pretty much just pulls out) & lift it up to see the gear stick. There is a wire C-clip that holds the knob on, push this off & the knob & gaiter will just lift off easily.

No idea what could be causing the rattle if it's a standard gearlever & knob but it's not a complicated thing so once you've got it apart it should be fairly obvious [;)]

Mine had an after-market knob on, so I have replaced the original one. I too had a rattle so I wrapped some velcro strip around the top of the metal part that the knob fits over and then replaced the knob, no rattle and I now have a much more precise shift as well.

I don't have the circlip to attach the gearknob which isn't a problem 99% of the time....until i get over-excited pulling out of a side road and have ended up with the knob in my hand after changing into second [:)]

It's the pin that the gearstick uses to connect to the rod - it wears oval over time

New (or good s/h) gearstick is the best option - or there are procedures for replacing the pin.

many thanks,
will take a good look at it on saturday, i didnt want to start pulling things apart without know what was under the gatter.
