At idle with clutch pedal not depressed a rattling noise from the front of the transaxle ? Disappears when clutch pedal is depressed. Any thoughts? loose bolts maybe ?
Anyone experienced this rattling noise?

difficult to diagnose by e-mail but....

If the noise dissappears when you dip the clutch = drive train related, as even in neutral with the clutch up (no feet on pedal) you've drive going into the box.

So, could be rattle of bolts holding the box to the torque tube - easy to check 4 x 19mm (might be one that's an allen key bolt).

Working backwards into the gearbox, it could be the connector shaft that connects the torque tube to the gearbox (unlikely be could be)

Then you're into the gearbox itself - input shaft bearings etc - don't know the gearbox internals well enough to comment.

Could be the thrust bearing on the clutch which would have slack taken up when you dip the clutch, or another big one with noisy backends is beans and brussel sprouts [:D]

Hi Nick

Could be a case of "they all do that"! Mine certainly rattles a bit in neutral, but there have been discussions on here before, the consensus was, I think, just a gear rattling on the layshaft. I expect Paul will be along soon to confirm that...

The story was, I recall, that it was a common enough problem when the cars were new for Porsche to eventually refuse warranty claims on it. On the plus side it doesn't seem to be something that gets worse quickly (mine hasn't over 4 yrs), so if this is what you've got then maybe not to worry...if it's getting worse then go ahead and worry!

You'll also find on here that plenty of people recommend a change of transmission oil, often recommending Swepco (available from Berlyn Services?). At the very least check the oil level in the 'box first!

Yup, mines done it for the 13 years I've owned it. When stationary in Neutral, pedal up slight rattle, pedal down goes away.

I called Bert Gear (944 Technical Rep) as soon as I joined the Club and he said it was the idler gear in the gearbox - don't worry

So I haven't [:)]

Same here but Promax advised it could be one of the torque tube bearings. But I always put this down to the thurst bearing, guess it could be either.

Yes according to Clark's garage this noise is attributed to clutch thrust/pilot bearings, or torque tube bearings (less common). My S2 also had the same noise and it sounded like a jangle of nuts in a tin going round and round. When the clutch was changed so was the thrust bearing (its part of the clutch kit) and the noise went away completely.

When was the clutch last changed if ever? Not sure if Swepco will help much..

Done a bit more checking and:
1 - from cold little noise when hot more noticeable.
2- I changed the gearbox oil 3 weeks ago,fully synthetic 70w -90.
3 - checked history and last oil change at 151K 2 yrs ago castrolsaf-xj 75w-140.
4 - clutch replaced 60k ago.
5 - clutch and gear change are fine.

So appears to be related to the box and noisier when hot , a bit of noise since I have had the car ( 6wks) but definitely more noticeable since oil change.

Nick,

If there is some play and worn gear in the box then fully synthetic oil may well be way too thin hence the more noise when hot and since you carried out the oil change.

Put some thick stuff back in the 20+ old metal cogs[:D][:D]

I may be wrong but I doubt its the gearbox, 60k is a fair bit on a clutch, mine was working fine before it went and it still had the jangle aswell, many cars have the noise for years. I would just keep it as it for now (it wont hurt) and when the clutch needs replacing I'd check the TT bearings whilst your at it.

You certainly need a bit more diagnosis.

Can you get the car up on a lift (or over a pit) and pinpoint where the noise is coming from? Either have a listen next time if goes in for an MOT or slip your local garage a fiver and ask to use their ramp for 5 minutes.

The drivechain is pretty long (clutch to gearbox output) and you will easily narrow down the rough area the rattle is coming from.

Oli.

Yes will get up in the air and have a listen with the old stethoscope ( tube in the ear ).
Will let you know what I find. Thanks for the thoughts and suggestions.
