noisy starter motor?

My 112,000 miles C2 often takes two or three churns to fire, whether hot or cold. When it doesn't catch, what sounds like the starter motor emits a disconcerting clatter and a final 'thump.'
Has anyone else experienced this? Engine (unrebuilt) behaves ok and oil consumption is about a litre /5000miles.

Could be a battery issue. I had the same problem due to the car standing over winter. Not sure about the final thump though as mine didn't have that.

New battery sorted the problem

If the battery's turning it over that many times - prob OK, though always worth investigating - I would have thought you need the starter motor looking at. My 146k C2 always starts first time, hot or cold, without any churning. How long have you had the car and have you ever had your plugs replaced?[;)]
