Noisy Steering

1996 993 Carrera 4. When moving off and turning the steering from straight ahead to a tight lock to exit a cramped parking space for example, there is a groaning noise/vibration which I feel up through the steering. Not every time, but I fancy of late it's becoming more frequent. The power steering performs perfectly.
Anyone any ideas as to cause ?

Hi I get the same noise so interested in any advice. Car has done 67K so might be due for some work on this. Alan

It sounds like the PAS pump, sometimes replacing all the seals and replacing the PAS fluid can cure it.

I would recommend going to a specialist to have the steering checked just to make sure its nothing serious or something that could cause further expense or damage.

I get exactly the same symptons on my 993 C4. I took it in to a specialist and was advised that it was a resonance in the hydraulic pipes feeding the power steering. Apparently, there is a an uprated bracket that reduces the problem (mine already had this fitted). I was also told it was not uncommon and not a reason to worry.

PP in addition , I presume that if you have a C4 then it must be fitted with a Varioram engine. If this is the case, can you take a look at my post on Varioram emission test. Perhaps you could help ?

Maurice, Yes level in reservoir with engine at idle is well up, perhaps 1/16th of an inch from the top marker.

Hi Tony
This appears to be a common occurence on 944's as well. Lots of posts about it.Seems that changing the PS fluid helps to eradicate it most of the time.

Funny you should post this - but I've not long had my C2S and noticed that its just started making a groaning noise during low speed parking manouvres - am going up to Strasse tomorrow for a full check so will report back as to what they say

Found out what it was - front suspension top mounts on the way out - quite an unusual problem. Although the boys at Strasse are going to sort it as its still under warranty. Got to say though that it wasn't actually a groaning noise more like a muted clicking noise from the front end when manouvering the car at slow speed.
