Noisy tappets

Im using the same grade of oil as you and I can't hear an old man playing the spoons. 944 engines do have a bit of tappet noise I have found. Is it a new noise for your engine?

I wasn't going to bother asking about this as there's not a lot i can do about it without presumably rebuilding my head, but in view of the fact i'm off work with what feels like a snapped spine i'll take a break from defrosting the contents of the freezer on my lower back to write this.

When i start up the car from cold it sounds like i've got and old man sat under the bonnet playing the spoons for a couple of moments until i get full oil prerssure. The rest of the time it just ticks on maybe one tappet, but from cold the noise is flipping cringeworthy. Any opinions?

I took mine out to show my girlfeinds son. the engine was up to temperature. When i got home and parked. I heard what sounded to me as the same noise you discribed, "An old man playing the spoons". I rev'ed the engine and it stopped. I was wondering if anyone knows what this is. Not sure what oil is in it, as just got the car back from the garage[:(].

Mine only happens when it's cold, it's like the oil is not getting there fast enough. Strangely it started shortly after i'd flushed the engine for the first time after i'd got the car. It was also accompanied by a general drop in oil pressure, the car used to run at 5 Bar all the time and over successive flushes this has dropped to 3.5 bar when warm. It's as if i've flushed out all the carbon that was keeping it quiet.

My early car did the same. If i remember correctly it was the check valve between the head and cam box sticking, allowing the oil to drain from the cam box when the engine is off. When I changed the headgasket, cleaning the oil sludge solved the problem. Could try an oil flush but I know some people believe they cause more harm than good with the sludge finding new places to stick.

It's also worth checking the injectors, these are prone to becoming noisy over time. Search this forum on 'noisy injectors'.

More than likely. [link=http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/fb.asp?m=286351]http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/fb.asp?m=286351[/link]

Are you using the same oil? with a good synth mine stays close to 5 unless really (track day) hot, with lesser oils it drops when warm to around 3.5 Tony
