Noisy Tappets

As long as the tappet gap has remained unchanged then there should be no problem. If the noise isn't going away when the car is warm then there is a problem with the oil feed to the tappets. As said before oil can sludge up in engines when not used. As a minimum I would suggets an oil and filter change - not too expensive and you should do it anyway after standing so long. In fact I would change all my fluids. If that doesn't help I would then get the rocker cover off and start investigating why your tappets aren't hydraulic anymore.

My 1989 2.7 944 had not been run up for over 12mnths.

I started it this weekend. It started so well!!...however the top end is ticking loudly.

I suspect the tappets have gone dry and "stuck"..The engine ran sweetly beforehand.

So...any ideas how to resolve this?..ie additives?..Techniques?

The oil pressure is reading fine.

I wouldn't worry - although it's quite disturbing when you hear the noise. It should go after 5-10 mins driving.

As Rob said, oil and filter change. And then, as edh said, run it a little. Warming it all up may well unstick jammed tappets. Wynns do an oil flush which you add to the old oil before removing it. This is (I think) recommended by PCGB for ticky tappets, although there are other such products on the market which will do the same job. Oli.

I've heard this too on a car that had nothing mechanically wrong with it but had been left sitting for too long. Don't panic. Always worth changing the oil anyway I recommend mobil 1 15/50 semi synthetic and a genuine filter. It may cost you £20 extra over a base brand oil change but keeping the 944's bores in tact is the most important thing you can do and this is spoken to be by anyone who's stripped engines using it the best way to keep your engine fresh.
