Non electric door mirrors

Has anybody fitted Golf GTI Mk 1 non electric door mirrors or can you suggest another type that will fit in place of our standard ones?

I believe the Mk 1 Golf mirrors are the same ones as fitted to the early 924 - it's certainly what I've bought for mine but I haven't fitted them yet!

How much did you pay for them ? I've found a Golf site where the quoted price for a pair is £33 + postage.

Poverty spec 924s used a screw on Golf near side mirror. Their drivers side mirror was cable operated and fitted onto a standard door: this part is still available from Porsche, it was used on the Turbo Cup cars I believe; but it costs a small fortune...

Correct, I looked at golf clipper mirrors and the cup car mirrors and the base is different. The mirror housing itself looks identical. I couldn't find a base like that anywhere and the few ppl I asked that knew anything about it suggested it was a race part special.

To the best of my knowledge, no. Seam (Tam Lin) has a set, bought at great expense, I believe.

I can confirm most of the posts on this thread:

1) The cup mirrors are basically a Golf mirror housing with a Porsche-special foot made to look like the black plastic mirror housing, but actually made from some alloy, coated, plus a plastic seal. This special foot rather unsurprisingly fits exactly & uses the same hex-screw tightening method as the Flag mirrors.
2) It's expensive from your friendly neighbourhood Porsche centre, but not as expensive as Cup Teardrops
3) Anything first seen on a 924GTS is fine by me
4) They look a lot like this (Thanks to landroverstormer In Silverstone evening thread!) http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x162/landroverstormer/Porsche%20Track%20Say/DSC_0075.jpg
5) Oh, and if in a moment of fiscal weakness you decide to invest, make sure you get the ones correctly "sided" for RHD, otherwise you get a field of view of a postage stamp at 200 yards. Ask me how I know ;-)
