Non OEM wheels

What's the general consensus on non-factory (i.e non Porsche) wheels? I have some 19" Carrera S alloys currently but I've picked up a dent from a damn pothole in the nearside front (only a tiny one, doesn't seem to affect steering or handling) and whilst I've found a suitable replacement on eBay at £350, I also see plenty of other complete sets of non-Porsche wheels for not a lot more.

So, are there any downsides to non-Porsche wheels?

There are plenty of firms around that would reinstate your damaged wheel and the cost is unlikely to be prohibitive.

Clive

Or part ex it with Jasmine for a genuine Porsche wheel. Replica wheels are inferior quality, often heavier than the real thing and sometimes even different offsets.

Replica wheels have no place on a 997, not even the cheapest 54 plate cars.

Agreed!!!!!

Thanks for the replies - your thoughts are along the same lines as mine.

All the wheels have just been refinished by my OPC so I don't want to get the dent knocked out, as it were, because then it'll need repainting again and no doubt won't match the other three wheels - hence was looking for another wheel. I don't know who Jasmine is but I'm sure I can find him/her with the search function.

Thanks.

You may be misinterpreting the repair process. It's usually done using special equipment and hydraulic rams. There's no "dent knocking out" and it does not normally involve damaging finished surfaces. Of course, it all depends on the extent of the wheel damage in the first place. [8|]

I've just had 2 magnesium wheels, flat-spotted by potholes, successfully repaired locally without need for any paint rectification whatsoever and saved myself the best part of £2K. [;)] There are plenty of firms that will crack test the wheels before they're refitted, if you're needing reassurance.

It's another option - but it's your choice.

Clive

I am sure that Cargraphic, BBS and others might have something to say about that.

In general you do get what you pay for, so cheap copies of Porsche wheels can be a bad place to go.

thanks everyone for your comments; I may well be wrong about the wheel repair process then, assumption on my part.

Cheers

Matt

I doubt it, they don't make replica wheels. I have no issue with premium wheels, as their production processes are stringent and their quality control second to none.

But i have seen replica wheels where the cating was so rough that even after painting they felt like 200grit sandpaper.
