hiya all, when my wife was leaving work last night, her golf gti turbos pass side front window dropped after starting to open the window it moved down a few inches then suddenly dropped down into the door,out of sight and seems out of reach, any ideas to what could have caused this? and is it a quick fix that a breakdown recovery could and would do? [wifes a nurse on a high dependancy ward so imperative she has her car and she wont drive the s2] so any thoughts on what this problem could be? wifes gti is a 2000 on a w reg, mint with 72,000, cheers jason p

thanks pastry, found out its a common fault with golfs,something to do with the mechanism,so off to vw specialist on monday with the recent new clutch,flywheel, back discs and pads plus exterior window seals in the very near future i think i stand in a good position to get it gone and "encourage " her to purchase something a bit more fun, cheers jason p

Hi Jason,
I read on a VW forum that the problem is with the plastic window regulator. It would appear that repair kits are available with metal clips. I seem to recall reading that American market VWs had metal window regulators and some VW enthusiasts ordered them to upgrade their cars.
Hope that this is of some help.
Don`t know if I am allowed to say which forum I read this on ? You could PM me if you wanted to know.
Cheers.

I had this happen a year ago, or so, to my 2001 Mk4 Golf. I blame my friend who tried to open the window, when they were frosted shut [
]
Basically, the clip at the front, which held the glass had quite a bit of aluminium corrosion on it, was seized and it wasn't gripping the glass properly. Subsequent use of the electric window made it slip off the clip a little more, and eventually, the front part of the window, (which was gripped by the corroded clip) came free of the clip and the front part of the window fell in.
Fortunately, I was able to get some duct tape and pull the glass back up and close the window, until I could look at the problem.
I followed the instructions in the second reply in this thread, took off the clips (which were already the metal type) and soaked the clip in Wurth Rost Off. This got rid of all the corrosion and the clip worked freely again and once re-assembled, the electric windows worked fine again [

I did buy a set of replacement clips from my local VW garage before taking it all apart, thinking my car may have the plastic clips, but it turned out that my car had the metal clips from new anyway. Fortunately, VW let me return them!
My advice would be to take it apart and investigate what's causing the problem, before buying anything!
