Non Starter 944

I'm R23 RO and just had a call from a member in Surrey who has a 944 cab (less than 10k miles on the clock!). It's stuck in his garage as a non-starter. Rotor and fuel pump have been checked as OK and coil is yielding some output. He has taken from adive from his mechanic (now retired and living miles away) that it may be the DME or flywheel sensor.

Is there anyone living near Leatherhead who might be able to help either mobile specialist or keen amateur?

It will be difficult to get the car out of the garage unless it starts otherwise a tow to a specialist would be in order.

Any ideas?
 
Most likely a DME relay, certainly that's the first thing to try.

If it's only done <10k miles then does it really matter that is doesn't start? It's clearly just a garage ornament anyway. Once it is going we should enforce a compulsory purchase order on it so someone who will actually use it will get the benefit.

I suggest making up the three wire emergency jumper shown about 3/4 of the way down or just buying a new relay (less than £20 from the OPC). This relay causes most non-starting problems on 944s, I've worn out 2 in the last 7 years with my S2. The relay switches on the fuel pump, so when its working you should smell fuel from each cylinder.

After that its a case of removing each spark plug still connected to the plug lead, earthing it on the engine block and seeing if you get a good spark

Just remind us all how many miles you've driven your 944 Turbo this year. [;)]
 
I have had starting problems with my 944 s2. on both occasions the problem was the blue topped temperature sensor which screws into the front of the head and is visible under a water pipe. The last time it happened I got the engine going by easing back the air intake trunking between the flow meter and the throttle assembly and squirting easy start in to richen the mixture whilst at the same time cranking the engine. The problem being that the sensor is telling the ECU that the engine is warm so its not getting a rich enough mixture to stsrt when cold, it's fine when it's warm. Hope this helps. Tony

Just remind us all how many miles you've driven your 944 Turbo this year. [;)]

But it's been undergoing a "restoration" [&:] Anyway I think the focus should be on the fact I have done 26,000 miles in it in the 4 years I've owned it rather than worrying too much about that being done largely in the first 5 months [8D] And I promise to do better very soon [8|]

I know and it was taken as such. I have long become used to the "when will it be running?" and "how long is it since you drove it?" Almost every time I see Adrian at Exeter OPC he asks when I'm fitting a sump guard as well [:mad:][8|]
