Non starter, help,

Jonny B

New member
my cars stranded at a friends house, i left it there over night, the next day a mate moved ten yards off the drive, which it coughed n spluttered but ran, i came to pick it that evening and it wont start so,
it turns over fine and the starter doesnt slow up, but........ it sounds a lot different to how it used to turn over, slower maybe, but its consistant, all fuses are fine, all electrics work fine.

it tries to fire, the rev counter jumps when it sounds like its gonna fire,

im not sure fuel is reaching the engine, how do you check? but.......... could it be the darn DME relay, i instantly assumed this was the problem and im ordering a new one anyway, i had a look in mine and it looks ok, nothin obvious.
I'll try another battery tonight, check the new rotor n dizzy etc then fit a new relay when one arrives other than that im stumped, she's a great runner, 88' 944s,

any suggestions would be much appreciated!!!!

i was hopin to be at the redwell in tomoz night too!!!!!!!

DME relay is the most likely thing wrong with it. Apparently the symptom is that it turns over really slowly and then seems as if it just manages to fire. (Think of an old aero engine coughting and spluttering into life.)
If no joy before tomorrow night and you still want to go to Redwell I'm going (probably in my tatty 924S and would give you a lift. I'm in Cleveleys so not a million miles away. Email me and let me know. (preferably with contact number).
Cheers,

DME relay.

You can test by manually jumpering pins 87, 87b and 30 together. This will provide the energy to the DME and fuel pump in the absence of a relay. If the car starts, you know the relay is at fault. You'll have to remove the link when you have switched off the engine otherwise the battery will go flat.

cheers guys,
where can i get a relay quick? ive only found one on the internet at porscheshop n that probably will take days, the local autoparts cant get one, im only off work today!!
cheers fred, might take you up on the offer, would be my first time of attending, only joined last month.

have you tested with a piece of wire to confirm that it definately is the relay?

There's usually a couple on eBay.

If you can get to Cleveleys you can borrow one of my spares until yours arrives.
Send mail with contact number.
Cheers,

Vauxhall ones are the same - first time mine let me down the AA guy loaned me a used Vauxhall one to get me home but couldn't leave me with it as it wasn't new so I bought one from the Vauxhall dealer. That was 11 years ago so before you ask I don't have the p/n, but it was the fuel pump relay for a Cavalier or Vectra I think. Exactly the same as the Porsche part except it had a metal bracket riveted to it that I pulled off. There must be a Vauxhall dealer near you?

Of course if there is an OPC near you it should be in stock.

right, the symptoms do point to a relay, i cant test it as the cars not with me or my garage. After phoning around five porsche specialists that had run out of stock, ive got one on special delivery from the porsche dealer in chester to arrive tmoz midday and its cheaper than any of the specialists lol.
The vauxhall idea sounds an interesting source for future reference!
Cheers guys
