Non-Starter

I have a late 88 3.2 carrera that has decided to play up tonight (literally). The missues and I were planning on going out in it. I picked the car up from where I store it at my parents and as per usual it started first time. After an hour of being parked on my driveway the car now refuses to start. The starter motor spins over cheerfully but no ignition. The car has only once done this before and again this was when the engine was warm. Neither stone cold or hot starts have caused a problem todate. I'm hoping he car - now stranded on my drive - will start when cold in the morning. Can anybody give any advise as to where I should start looking for the problem???

Very nice!! Just wish I could figure out how to paste my pics here too. Somebody did explain to me but obviously I've still not sussed it!

i had a very similar problem and it turned out to be the DME (£30 to replace from main dealer) There is a way of checking it by bridging a fuse and checking if the fuel pump runs........ i will dig out the fact/info sheet and send it to you. I fialed the new DME and that failed after two months! I have fitted a new DME and so far so good

However..................

I am experiencing a different starting problem. I have an 85 3.2. i get in and it starts, i go for a drive................. doesnt matter how far, 1-40 miles and i park up and when i return nothing. i get to the cranking possition on the ignition and all that happens is an audible hum as i try to engage the starter.

The car will start (ignition on) with a very slight push. The ignition barrel is worn, sometimes the key will not turn at all without a bit of a battle so i made a dession and i have ordered a new ignition assembly (i got it from the states as the dollar is so weak at the moment) i am waiting for it to arrive.

My theory is that it could be the starter or the ignition and maybe both but the ignition needs attention anyway so..........................

The battery has been checked and it is in tiptop condition.

If the problem is still there then i will need to change the starter (again the states seems to be the best deal................ $215 for a high torque unit, brand new non exchange)

To prove the ignition barrel is at fault; pull the wires off the starter (battery off) and make a crude switch there next to the starter. If it works Ok, then the problem is between there and the Key. A quick way to fix this is to install a relay on the circuit. Then, if a voltage drop is the problem (most likely) the relay will fix this. Four pounds for a 30amp relay.
Keep on truck-en,

I had exactly the same problem with my SC a few years back when the engine was hot, turning the ignition key wouldn't turn the starter over, there was just an audible hum. Normally Iwould investigate and fix it myself but as I needed the car asap I left it to my chosen Independent and they had the original starter repaired and it's been fine ever since . I remember it cost about £100.00
