If you have already experienced & solved this little mystery ,I beg forgiveness but thought it worthy of a mention since there are quite frequent posts of 924S's & early 944's exhibiting this problem.
Shortly before Xmas my wife had driven to Southport & back to Formby before stopping at the home of our cat & tortoise minder to drop off our spare rear door key as we were away at our daughter's over Xmas-the car had run perfectly as usual over this journey of approx 20 miles. It was however hissing down.
When she returned to the car ,it started & then quickly cut out & she repeated this procedure several times before ringing me-with the possible reason being that the petrol warning light was on,the side road was cambered & she though she coulod have run down the fuel too low (there seemed to be some valid feminine logical reason why she hadn't put some fuel in at the journey start).
I returned home from Liverpool, picked up some spare petrol & went to meet her-put the petrol in but with exactly the same problem.
Still hissing down so towed her home using my sprung rigid bar .
Aha,I thought-typical DME problem-so next day ,now dry, tried all my spare DME relays including the brand new 993 numbered one without success.
Used my Lucas spark checker -plenty of sparks-removed blanking nut & steel ball from end of fuel rail-absolutely nothing emerged so I concluded that the fuel pump had gone US-I had already looked at the supplementary fuse box & all fuses looked intact & I had gently "tweaked " the fuses to ensure good contact.
Jacked up the rear,& WD 40'd all fuel connections ,nuts etc ready to take the pump off. Then went off up to Northumberland for Xmas but all weekend this problem bugged me-although the pump would appear to be the original since we have had the car as it's second owner since 29K miles ,now on 104K miles & 30 yrs old this May,I couldn't quite accept that it would suddenly fail completely after running OK.
So returning from Morpeth,I got on my back in the passenger side with a LED torch & carefully examined all the supplementary fuses 1 by 1.
I found that fuse No 2-the fuel pump one had an almost invisible split across one end of the fusible strip just just before it folds over the torpedo shaped fuse end.
Popped in a new 15 amp fuse & hey presto ,car started immediately.
So the moral is -get new glasses![]
