Got a problem! The fan does not switch off when the engine is off! Checked relay and the fan still remains on.Could it be the temperature sensor or something else? Cheers Tom.

Does the fan run all the time even after the car has been sat all night? The engine cooling fan should run after the engine is switched off untill the engine has cooled sufficiently.

Hi Graeme. It will run until the battery is flat.It is the second fan that kicks in when the temp goes up.Took the car to have the alarm repaired and had to sit in traffic.Temp went up and second fan kicked in. It has done it before and I took the relay out/put it back in and the fan was Ok.Now you can only stop it by taking the relay out.So put new relay in and still have the problem!!

Most likely the temp sensor. It's about ÂŁ20. You can pull a fuse (15 I think) until you replave it but remember it's out if you get caught in traffic.

Not sure what model you have and I am not sure what the differences are between the models, but the fan relay on the 944S is a 176 pound plus vat from the OPC and not that much cheaper elsewhere. The sensor is on the passenger side of the radiator just below the top hose on the 944S.

The fan may come on when the car is first turned off usually due to heat sink and shouldn't remain on for more than aprox 5 minutes. As far as I understand there are two fan speeds on the 'S', with high speed kicking in as the needle reaches the upper end of the upper mark of the gauge (before the red sector).

The heat switch in the radiator is cheaper to buy and range in price from 10 pounds through to 30 pounds. You will need a heaft size socket wrench though as it is over 24mm. And don't over toque it. I don't have the torque setting to hand right now though.

Shop around for a temp. switch it's the next thing to try. I changed one a few years back & seem to recall having to borrow a 32mm socket, but check this.

The cheapest I have found is on the German and swedish website

www.gsfcarparts.com
and is about 4 pounds plus vat and delivery. I just paid four times that for mine last month from a specialist.

Search under 'porsche 944' then s'witches, senders, instruments'.

Hmmm.... lets just say that I am surrounded by print out, service manuals, price lists, and skinned knuckles.

The replacement proceedure is on this website under 'garage manual' , then "thermo switch"

Clarkes Garage

Although it is pretty simple to undertake, just don't over torque it or cross thread it. Radiators are not of the most robust materials.

My lux has a single fan, It has two speeds. When you switch off the engine with the fan running, the speed changes to slow.
I have always thought this was to save the battery.

Is the fan ment to change speed with the temperature while driving?

Mine did the same a couple of years ago (944S). Temperature sensor in the radiator. It's got 2 spade termainals. If you pull one off, the fan will stop to prove the problem.

Cheap part from Eurocarparts and easy to replace. Make sure you bleed the system properly afterwards ...

Had that on 86 lux about 18 months ago and was advised to change both the relay and the sensor together irrespective of which was faulty. So said so done...re the question would the fan still be running the following morning...sadly not...battery flat with no jumpleads and its jolly tricky trying to bump start an automatic!

Cheers!
