Non-working Wiper

Good morning all! This morning's entertainment whilst driving to work was the driver's side wiper blade stopping moving whilst on the dual carriageway - interesting driving looking through the passenger side and the open window. On arriving at work, I found that the ball and socket joint that connects the wiper arm to the rod that transmits the movement had come apart. I have clicked it back into place, but I've got to wonder how long this will stay fixed for. Has anybody else had similar problems, and if so, what is the fix?

Hi Graham,

I had the same with my Lux, they are about £8 from porsche and are fairly easy to replace. They just pop on as you have been doing with the old one, but are a bit tighter. Let me know if you need any more info.

anyone got any part numbers? I know my OPC likes that...... Mine's held together with two tie-wraps at the moment!!!
 
Yours being LHD will quite likely be different part numbers. I take it you don't have a copy of PET?
 
so what is to be replaced then? I was on the understanding it's just the little plastic cup (as a repair piece)?

I have PET yes....
 
If you're lucky it's a linkage arm. It has a nylon cup either end and pops over a ball on the motor on one end and on the arm at the other.

On RHD cars the cup on the driver's arm wears because runoff from the screen washes grit into it. Usually just replacing the arm (the l"ong one" which is what the OPC will ask, short being the passenger side one) is enough but on my cab with almost 190k miles at the time the ball was worn too so I had to replace the lot.

The link rods are about £8 for the long one and £6 for the short, a whole mechanism including new link rods already fitted (but not the motor) was £60+VAT.
 
Ahh, OK, so it's a complete arm.

The outer end of the drivers linkage gets the same problem on mine. There's nothing covering it under the screen.

You should have seen my bosses face one day after I'd driven into work. The thing had popped off in the morning drive, and I had to fix it for the drive home (it was howling down!). Of course, I didn't have ANY tools in the car. I'd done an engine swap the previous weekend and left the tools in the garage. anyhow, there I am, a design engineer by trade, under the hood of my car (which of course everyone assumes - Ahh, Porsche=expensive!) with a shoelace tying the thing together to get me home!!!!!

I'll check in PET on the P/N for the LH arm. I certainly don't fancy changing the whole mechanism, there's a bit of a heater in the way!

I had mine held together with approx 20 rubber bands for the best part of a month. [8D]
 
Hi Mike,
I drove 600 miles in pouring rain, stopping to pop the bushes back together with a mole grips periodically.It needed a new bar, which I found a bit of a pain to replace. Take care and mark the position of the crank on the motor before you start.

Mine went last Christmas night, driving back from the outlaws at about 11pm when it was blowing a blizzard over black ice and of course no gritters out...

It isn't too bad doing the whole thing as the heater box comes out relatively easily. The 10mm nuts that hold the mech to the scuttle are a bit of a pain though. You do need to mark the position of the shaft on the motor if you take the whole thing apart or you have lots of trial and error fits (ask me how I know [8|]) but just replacing the linkage rod you don't need to take it apart, just work under the plastic shroud.
 
For a quick fix aparently a piece of the "cheap plastic floppy envelope type of cd holder" wedges in there quite nicely,

OPC = Official Porsche Centre, or your local dealer in other words
PET is the Porsche parts database CD. I don't know what the ackronym stands for but it might well be German.
 
Ahh! Thanks. My nearest centre is about 60 miles away, can you recommend mail-order sources?
P.S. The wiper popped off again this morning on the drive when I squirted the windscreen. It seems to be a 'pressing' problem, if you'll excuse the pun! In the meantime, I'll probably go with the rubber band/tie-wrap solution to keeping the two parts together.
 
Tie wraps don't work well in my experience as they don't stretch.
