i still have the original set of 18" hollow turbo twists if you need a spare set. I had only fitted the genuine GT3 alloys a couple of months before the fire []
So how do you find the 996 compared to your old Boxster?

Handling is also different when you start pushing on a bit, you can certainly feel the mid / rear engine difference.
In fact if you didn't look at the dash/interior you'd be very surprised how much the 2 cars share in common components

It would have to be a replacement for the 944 so I'm really torn between the two as the 944 is so practical with the boot space and never gives me any bother so I'd hate to buy a troublesome 996 and regret it.

Are they still good cars? Absolutely, do they drive well, yes they do. Are they fun, yes they are. Will people stare at one going down the street?.......no, probably not. This cannot be said about the 944!
Just my tuppence worth.
Nice car btw Edd!

This ^^^ but I've never felt the love for the 996 TBH, compared to the 993 and the 997 it just looks wrong IMO.

The 996 will have it's day... last of the analogue 911's, clean styling, light weight (lighter than a 993 for example).
Most of the issues are with the m96 engine so common to cayman, boxster, 997.1 as well. Bore scoring being the biggest one I think.
One point that PH (of ph sportscars) pointed out is that most 996's were everyday cars and consequently there aren't many really nice, low mileage ones left.
Anyway, it passes my 'stop by the window to look at it every time you walk past' test, so I'm happy with that.

I didn't know they were lighter than the 993, that's a pleasant surprise!
I've been following this thread on Pistonheads - a far cry from your example, Ed, but I think it's a great story nonetheless:

It looks like a great buy!

Zeusy said:Hi Ed. A good looking 996 you have there. Yep ..... I too have grown to like them as time has gone by. The upshot is I bought an early one (March '98)with a very sick sounding engine earlier this year. It was bound for the breakers but I managed to find a corner to keep it in. The plan is to get it up to Hartech ASAP and investigate what the problem is. Its a C2 manual / cable throttle version with MO30 / LSD and factory fitted GT3 body kit. I think it will become a track beastie at some point but we will get it up and running first and then see what happens. Regards. Zeusy.[]
You seem to like buying cars with broken engines.. Have you fitted those cams yet? []
A mate of mine went the Hartech route on his (rod bearing failure at Croft I think) Wasn't cheap, but it's good for the long term now.
