Not a 944, but still a Porsche..

I bought a 996 last week - it's really rather nice...
56k miles, C2 manual, cable throttle, etc... Just needs to go back to the original amber lights to make it perfect
It's been really well looked after and is incredibly fresh still - doesn't feel like a 17 year old car

hey Edd,,,
congrats,,looks a lovely car,,
hope you enjoy her,,
did you say that you were going to have the original side repeaters fitted?,,,
best of luck,,jasonp

Very nice Ed. My 996 didn't end well unfortunately but I loved it for the 2 years I had it. I now have a 997.2 PDK which is fantastic as a daily driver but in my opinion the 996 is more fun - smaller, lighter, enough but not too much power. Feels fantastic when you get the weight transfer working! Great choice, enjoy!

Some kind of electrical fault, never found out exactly what caused it - by the time the fire brigade arrived there wasn't much of the back of the car left! But fortunately the house and (more importantly!) the 944 were untouched so could have been a lot worse. 996s are not renowned for bursting into flames so don't worry [:D]

i still have the original set of 18" hollow turbo twists if you need a spare set. I had only fitted the genuine GT3 alloys a couple of months before the fire []

So how do you find the 996 compared to your old Boxster?

The 996 is surprisingly different. The noises are different - much more exhaust & engine noise whereas the boxster was all induction noise. More road noise in the 911 as well.

Handling is also different when you start pushing on a bit, you can certainly feel the mid / rear engine difference.

In fact if you didn't look at the dash/interior you'd be very surprised how much the 2 cars share in common components

That looks really nice Ed. Will be good to see it with the ambers fitted, I am really starting to like the look of them on both Boxsters and these.

Lovely car, I've always wanted a 996 and have been looking online regularly for a while but never been to view one or even driven one yet!

It would have to be a replacement for the 944 so I'm really torn between the two as the 944 is so practical with the boot space and never gives me any bother so I'd hate to buy a troublesome 996 and regret it.

I've looked at 996's and thought about them a lot a good few years ago, but glad I stuck with my 944 now. The 944 is a real head turner and built when cars were built by engineers. There are limited numbers left. The 996 was mass produced by bean counters. They are not rare and not really that special imo. They have been plagued by issues as well, mainly well documented.

Are they still good cars? Absolutely, do they drive well, yes they do. Are they fun, yes they are. Will people stare at one going down the street?.......no, probably not. This cannot be said about the 944!

Just my tuppence worth.

Nice car btw Edd!

This ^^^ but I've never felt the love for the 996 TBH, compared to the 993 and the 997 it just looks wrong IMO.

Ah well, you can't please everyone....

The 996 will have it's day... last of the analogue 911's, clean styling, light weight (lighter than a 993 for example).

Most of the issues are with the m96 engine so common to cayman, boxster, 997.1 as well. Bore scoring being the biggest one I think.

One point that PH (of ph sportscars) pointed out is that most 996's were everyday cars and consequently there aren't many really nice, low mileage ones left.

Anyway, it passes my 'stop by the window to look at it every time you walk past' test, so I'm happy with that.

When they came out I found the look a bit too bland and big, but over the last 5 or so years I think they've matured (and shrunk) very nicely and now look really rather striking.

I didn't know they were lighter than the 993, that's a pleasant surprise!

I've been following this thread on Pistonheads - a far cry from your example, Ed, but I think it's a great story nonetheless:

I can't help feeling that a well looked after 996 with a replaced IM bearing, manual or tip whichever, for around £14k would be a great daily. Having said that they aren't nearly as practical as a 944 as I found out.

Early cars had the more reliable dual row bearings - like mine, and the 300k one in Peter's link (what a great thread..)

Very nice Ed! I have a soft spot for 996's, I've been tempted by them on a few occasions now. A friend has a very nice early one, but unfortunately he's had some serious '996' issues with it. They seem to be a bit of a lottery, but I still covert them nonetheless.

It looks like a great buy!

Hi Ed. A good looking 996 you have there. Yep ..... I too have grown to like them as time has gone by. The upshot is I bought an early one (March '98)with a very sick sounding engine earlier this year. It was bound for the breakers but I managed to find a corner to keep it in. The plan is to get it up to Hartech ASAP and investigate what the problem is. Its a C2 manual / cable throttle version with MO30 / LSD and factory fitted GT3 body kit. I think it will become a track beastie at some point but we will get it up and running first and then see what happens. Regards. Zeusy.[:)]

You seem to like buying cars with broken engines.. Have you fitted those cams yet? [:)]

A mate of mine went the Hartech route on his (rod bearing failure at Croft I think) Wasn't cheap, but it's good for the long term now.
