Not a happy clutch..!!

Hi,

Further to my post about the magazine shoot for used car buyer magazine,my car has developed a wee problem. Lent the car to the editor Justin, who i must say a HUGE thanks to for letting me loose in a 996 GT3 and 996 carrera4S, and took it for a spin with myself in the passenger seat. gave it a bit of welly but nothing serious but after stopping briefly, when pulling away the car had a judder through the clutch and gearstick so bad that i could hardly drive it. All this with a nice fried clutch smell. I let it cool for a few minutes and tried again, not as bad as before but still juddering but once moving it was fine. Changing up and down the 'box was normal but pulling away was still bad.
After leaving for hour or so it was nearly back to normal which is usually nice and smooth but if you pull away slowly either forward or reverse it was still juddering through the pedal. and the nice burning smell as well but the clutch is definately not slipping in any gears.
Back home after a hours drive in which the gears were fine when moving it still has the judder when pulling away slowly on light throttle but is fine on part throttle with the slight burning smell present.[8|]
Any of this sound familiar to anyone?
Any ideas?

Cheers in advance,

Dave.

And you were saying about the 3.2 being the best buy!......jokes aside what you are describing is the sign of a spanked clutch, the surfaces are no longer smooth, perhaps distorted from getting fried playing racers, not that that's a bad thing , just costly sooner or later. It may be a loose mounting too. Is there any noise associated with the problem?

Guess you'll just have to drive it until it becomes a pain in the ass but it might just give up the ghost altogether first. Get a second opinion from a specialist.

Nessie,
I think they call that the price of fun....... I must say I'm jealous, sounds like you had a fantastic day even if it has cost you a clutch. Have you managed to wipe the smile off you face yet, maybe that will happen when you get the bill for the aformentioned clutch[;)]

Hi Phil

Still smiling but just about to phone around for prices then that may change..[8|]

I had a similar experience years ago. After a I let a friend drive my S.C. He pulled away from a standstill and slipped the clutch so as not to stall what was for him an unfamilliar car with that unusally sprung clutch mechanism. We got an instant burning smell but no noticable long term clutch slip, as the car went in for a service the next week I mentioned it to the service receptionist and as the car had done 80000 miles on the original clutch I thought it may be due a change. On collection they said the clutch had life left in it but they had adjusted it, well the pedal felt just the same to me so I took it that they had done nothing however look here.

It seems they could have adjusted it without me knowing. This is assuming you have a pre 915 gearbox as the G50 has a hydraulic clutch, and that you do not have the smell now when the unit is cold but it comes on with use as the clutch clearances change slightly as the clutch heats up and will therefore may cause it to slip.
That clutch lasted for another year or so before it finally gave up, so adjustment may buy you some time particularly if it is not your daily driver.
Hope this helps Jon.

Hi Jonathan

I do have a 915 'box so could be a bit of adjustment. Just been out in it this morning and no burning smell at all and only the slightest bit of judder tho to be honest i am conciously feeling for it now. Phoned up Northway in Reading where i had it serviced last and they said same as yourself basically, as long as there is no smell and it is not slipping then shouldn't worry too much for now. Will certainly look at the adjustment tho
Thanks for helpfull info,

Cheers

Dave
