Not All Ticking......

....is terminal.
My 98 C2 Cab started making a ticking sound from left rear corner about 3 years ago. Tried to ignore it (probably just a sticky cam follower??) but it got louder and louder. Head started to fill with worries about this being piston slap with inevitable D Chunk finale. Tried (and failed) to do Barry Harts counting test to tell if is a piston or a cam follower. Noise got louder. No smoke, car going fine but hey, 85K miles and I finally could not take it much more....the wait for the expensive bang and the huge bill/write off decision.
So, I took it to the experts. Diagnosis? a loose spark plug which was allowing gas blow-by. Unfortunately, the thread had become damaged, presumably by plug 'chatter' so it was an engine out job to fix it which meant a nice long list of 'while you are in there' jobs.

Sit rep for a 15 year old M96 3.4 motor at 85k?
Clutch...worn but serviceable. Changed.
RMS....fine but changed anyway.
Cylinder bores....fine. Post rebuild comp test 180 psi on all 6.

Heads rebuilt with all new tappets. Car now sounds like new and pulls beautifully.

Lots of extra costs in hacking off seized bolts and replacing a lots of suspension bits (track rod arms and the like). These cars seem to eat suspension components.

But I've fallen in love again. The cost of all of the above is MUCH less than 1 years depreciation on a 991!

Well, I was quoted £360 which, in the grand scheme of things is not too bad given that they were actually noisy. The mechanical chatter of the motor has completely gone now. It contributes to a much smoother feel to driving the car.
The actual tappet cost was buried in the final £2700 bill for the engine work. I think this is pretty reasonable for dropping the engine, stripping the heads to replace tappets, repairing the stripped spark plug thread, replace clutch and RMS, new gaskets, seals, sump seal and oil/air separator. I was prepared for more but was able to spend the money instead on a suspension refresh, alignment, a gold major service and a few other bits and bobs. Mindyou, all those things doubled the bill!

Sounds like a good price to me Simon. Nice to have peace of mind that everything has been checked and fixed. Here's to many more happy motoring miles!

yes that is very reasonable I was thinking turbo prices again Doh!

the inlets are usually £85 each the exhausts are relatively pennies at £12-15 and made by INA
