Not reaching temperature

Hi

I've noticed that my car is not reaching temperature. Yesterday I took it out in the evening and the temperature gauge didn't read above 60. It did get up to 80 the other day but I was in traffic and it was a warm day.

I checked the water and its full - so no problems there. I assume that it's just the thermostat stuck open, unless anyone knows different?

If I take it in to have the thermostat replaced, does anyone know how much work it is to change? Is it easy job or is there lots to remove to get to it? Is there anything else worth looking at/doing at the same time?

Hi Dave easy to change just done mine and put a stat in that opens quicker. Your need to renew the coolant and bleed the system 2-3 hrs with tea breaks
 
Chaps, bear in mind David has a Turbo, so a slightly different, and more time consuming, change. Book time for a Carrera is 1.0 hours, and for the Turbo is 2.3 hours.

Being a Tiptronic, another possibility is that the ATF heat exchanger valve has stuck open. This often happens when the small vacuum pipe between the throttle body and valve gets dislodged. (Usually after an alternator change or other work on the top of the engine).
 
Thanks guys for the info.

Problem started immediately after car went in for a geometry check/adjustment, I wouldn't have thought that would dislodge the vacuum pipe, but it did have an alternator change last year. So I guess that needs to be checked first before changing the thermostat.

Is a low temperature thermostat required for the Turbo? someone told me that the engine stays in a different mapping until it reaches 75 degrees.

People normally only fit lower temperature thermostats to M96 Carreras, to open sooner and get the water flowing earlier. It is to help prevent hot spots which can be the cause of bore scoring on these engines. No such problem with the Turbo.
 
I've booked the car in to West Tune (right next to Thruxton Race Circuit) - They seem to do more race cars than road, but Ray seems to know the cars really well. He did a full four wheel laser alignment for me recently that my usual specialist couldn't do. He also does engine re-maps if anyone is interested and he has a 4WD rolling road to do the job properly.

Anyway I was impressed so I thought I'd use him again. He's going to check the vacuum pipe first before progressing onto changing the thermostat.

 
I had the same problem with my 996TT Tip. Changing the thermostat made no difference and it was the solenoid valve that controls the flow to the third radiator - changed that and all well.

Just had mine back from my local Indy. Same symptoms. My money was on the tip heat exchanger valve....but it turned out to be a failing thermostat. Think it cost me about three hours labour plus the cost of the stat (some of that labour was removing the tip heat exchanger and ensuring it was ok and not blocked by anything).

Literally just got the car back yesterday (996T) - garage booked 3.5 hours to the tip inspection, stat replacement and bleed/re vac of the cooling system (having checked the paperwork)

The bill was over £900 ! (I had two new Pirelli P Zero rear tyres, gear shift selector repair and an MOT too lol)

Seems expensive. THermostst is 34.00 from Euro or 56.00 for LOwer Tempone
Having a new water pump fitted, total cost 350.00
NOT a difficult problem as its all easy to reach

Porsche quoted me 1200.00 So this time not an option

Large amount of cost is the Coolant which is about 100.00
