Not tyres again!!!

As I am about to pick up a second set of wheels, I am thinking about what tyres I want. I currently have SO-2's and need to take them off the mags before they can be reconned. The new wheels aren't mags.

I use the car a fair bit including motorway work but will also do 3-4 trackdays per year. If we assume that one set of tyres are the SO-2's, what otherctyres should I have and on which wheels (mags or not). And do I put the SO-2s on the new wheels for now until the mags are reconned or do I put something else on?

Finally, which wheels would you use for what type of driving. Do I use the mags everyday or for track days. Any opinions welcomed.
 
I thought about this quite a lot and my conclusions/thinking were as follows.

Mags with Michelin Cups or Pirelli Corsa for track use - benefit from the lighter weight at speed when it might actually be noticeable. Jimbers swapped from SO2s to the Pirelli Corsas on his mags and said they were a revelation in all areas. I think SO2s were probably good in their day but tyre technology may well have moved on from then. Michelin Cups are probably the ultimate dry weather road legal track tyre.

Spare wheels with Goodyear Eagle F1 (GSD3) for road use and wet track days - these tyres get good write ups with very strong wet weather performance. Would add some saftey on th road and confidence in the wet when you need it most. You could use the SO2s here as your road set.

Wheel weight makes some difference to drive (I am told) but as your car has power steering I doubt it would be noticeable/onerous. Only thing to consider re the Mags is if you stuff them on a track day they are a lot of money!! Mel has MM wheels he uses on track and can probably tell you if there is a noticeable difference.

I did the same as you and bought a second set of wheels so I could get the Mag refurbished. I use the PZero road tyres. They handled well at Spa. Got sticky and were ideal if you only took one set as it rained in the afternoon. PhilRS drove my car after his one with the MCups on it. He was impressed with the Pirellis for a road tyre on the track.

My rims were cracked when Diamond styling got them. So thy are scrap and I will now be using the Mirror polished Cup 1s and PZeros at Spa. Had hoped to have the mags with MCups but new wheels and tyres was thousands!

I use the mags with road legal tyres (dunlop formula R) for the track , bit noisy on the road , not reliable in the wet. I use standard alloys with Michelin Pilot Sport ( not cups) for normal road or wet track. Used to use SO2's for that but found they melted on track or disappeared fast on airfields...the michelins seem to be a lot harder compound and even car limit training days dont do too much damage. Heard good reports of toyo proxes for normal road as well.
Bottom line for me is use the mags where possible, but especially on track because that was really what they were fitted for. So if running 2 sets of wheels fit the track tyres to the mags. I compromise with road legal tyres rather than out and out slicks , gives me yet another excuse for being slow.....
