Not ugly at all

I had my first Panamera experience in the metal yesterday in the Edinburgh OPC. Why is everyone so hell bent on calling it ugly? I thought it was rather a handsome thing, unmistakably Porsche too, both inside and out. It is admittedly HUGE, way too big for UK roads, but Audi and Merc and Jaguar are probably equally guilty. On balance though I thought it had great presence, and while it not the finest car design I ever saw, I certainly don't think it's ugly

Next door to the OPC is Maserati/Ferrari, which are rarely criticised for their looks, yet am I the only person who thinks that new Maser coupe is hideous? It too is FAR too big for a coupe, and that gaping mouth of a grille is grotesque, as the horribly overstyled wheels. They also had a 599 and a Scalietti, both of which are also far too oversized for what are supposed to be sports cars.
 
Just seen the turbo today at opc belfast its big but i like it, Jesus see the size of those ceramic,s on the front.
 
I saw the Turbo at OPC Bolton on Sunday and I though that it looked fantastic. Much better than the pictures.
 
As I said in the other section of the look of this car, I think its stunning!!
As for the Maserati being hideous, I must disagree! I think it must be the best looking GT on the road today......I am a Maserati fan also!!
 
I agree. Even the rather large backside is quite an attractive feature. I much prefer the way it is slightly understated and has smoother lines than the lairy hairy chest wig that is the new Lambo. After reading on alot of forums now there seems to be a body of people who just like to criticise every new car that Porsche release not matter how good it might actually be. It seems to me that Porsche have done a fine job as usual on the basis the major critisisms seem to be its styling and the fact the stop start feature of the engine is not very slick - though the logic of buying a 2 ton £100k 500bhp 5ltr twin turbocharged then spec stop start featrure on the engine to save a few drops of fuel at the traffic lights seems a bit of a pointless nonsence. Maybe it's just me who thinks such features on such a car is laughable.
 
The Stop / Start feature is indeed not very good. I collected my Turbo last weekend, and I'm now getting into the ritual of turning off that function as soon as I start the car! (At the same time I hit the sports exhaust button just above the stop / start function button!)

But in all other respects I am utterly amazed at what Porsche have achieved. It is a great car to drive, and so beautifully screwed together.

went to porsche today, saw it, not bad at all, porsche dont make bad cars.
The car is not for me, its for maybe 50+ and is to compete with jag, merc and bently.
Looks really nice!
 
world would be boring if we all agreed on everything.

Its not ugly, its hideous...inside and out.

The fact is is the size of a small blue whale doesn't help either....[8|]
 
I sat in a Panamera for the very 1st time today... Its indeed a very BIG car! I had thought that it was ugly.. But it actually looks better in the metal and I was mightily impressed by the build quality ! I will definitely consider one in 3 yrs time when it drops into my price zone...
 
I also sat in a Panamera S this lunchtime for the first time.

It seems huge inside and very luxurious. Lots of 'toys' which seem to be in the right place for the driver. Still does not have flappy paddles for the auto box. Rear is a little cramped if the front seats are well back - but the front is so large that I doubt many will do that. The hatch area is not huge - but this seems to be a well put together luxury car.

As for what it is like to drive, I cannot say. I don't think that I would replace my current car with one of these; a bit too big and lumbering in looks.
 
I have always liked it, mind you I am an old duffer. Forget looks I was lucky enough to have a ride in one , driven by a Porsche instructor around their Silverstone track. You would not believe how this car go's, its absolutely amazing [:)]

Will be interesting when a family of four pass you in your GT3 or Turbo [:D]

I'm happy to oblige.

I've had the Panamera for around 3 months now, and have completed just under 3,000 miles. It's unlike any car I've ever owned before, and its Jekyll and Hyde character is very engaging.

The first thing to say is that it is beautifully put together. That's normal for Porsche, but the interior quality is a definitely a notch up on the norm. It is a lovely place to be, and even London rush hour traffic can't negate its calming effect!

Having come from a string of large BMWs, latterly an Alpina B5, I have found the quantity of buttons a challenge to get used to, but overall I much prefer single action buttons to the over complex i-Drive system.

Staying with the interior, I chose to specify the Burmester high end hi-fi. What a great option "" the sound quality is outstanding. You can tell particularly by how clearly and crisply the treble comes through; for me always the mark of great hi-fi. The car is very quiet even at motorway speeds, with tyre and engine noise well suppressed, so your favourite tunes can be heard at their best.

But to return to its split personality. In Comfort mode, it really does ride very softly indeed. You might even say it wallows over high speed bumps. The ride is unusual; coming from steel sprung cars, the air suspension feels just a little odd, with the occasional transverse ridge setting up a diagonal rocking movement (not large, but noticeable). Nevertheless I like it "" it is soothing and comfortable, not doubt aided by the very long wheelbase.

With the dampers turned to Sport the slight wallowing disappears, but the car still rides very well. In this regard, it is quite unlike the Sport mode on, say, a 911, which is usually rock hard! That is reserved for Sport Plus "" in this mode, the suspension is much more tightly controlled and in this mode the car is simply amazing "" whilst still riding acceptably. A combination of accurate steering, no body roll (thanks to PDCC), taut damping and biblical traction means the car can be hustled down a B-road at high speed with nary any drama. No other big saloon car I've driven comes close to the Panamera on a B-road blast. It puts a smile on my face every time.

The PDK gearbox is a mixed blessing. It is, for the most part, very smooth, but occasionally in town it does fumble a bit. But it is far better than the single clutch automated manuals. On the move, the speed of shift is, as expected, impressive, and the downshifts well rev-matched, although I am disappointed that in Sport Plus mode the gearbox does not "over blip" with the associated tuneful flare of engine revs (as the M3 DCT "˜box does). The thing I like least is the sense that of the clutch slipping as you pull away. Nothing is untoward; I just have a pathological dislike of slipping clutches more than needed (usually with a manual car I get the car rolling by just gently engaging the clutch and then squeezing on some gas "" CGT style). So I tend to be very gentle on the throttle, to avoid too much torque being transmitted from rest, and then once the car is rolling squeeze the gas more firmly.

Brakes are huge and exceptional. As ever, Porsche manage to make a ceramic system that has feel and is not over-servoed. I drove one of the Silverstone Driving Experience Turbos around the outer handling circuit for 30 minutes without stopping. The brakes, needless to say, never once faded.

The engine deserves special mention. It's wonderfully smooth and quiet (even with the sports exhaust, the note is pleasantly muted but with a nice growl), but it has exceptional torque. In Comfort mode, the "˜box has shifted to 5th by 30mph, and then 7th by 50mph. 7th is an inter-galactic gear "" by my estimation it is geared for 280mph plus! The advantage is low fuel consumption "" more than 20mpg on my 25 mile London commute, which I think is sensational. Use Sport mode, however, and the consumption drops to 14mpg on the same journey! Finally, I love the way the engine revs out properly "" there is no sense of breathlessness at the top end; in fact, the last 2,000rpm are frankly ballistic. It's not as tarmac rippling as a 997 GT2 (which always feels like it is going to tear up the road), but it is not far short.

Finally, I have to mention the looks. In the flesh, as is so often the case with an unusual design, I have grown to really admire many of the lines of the car. The front quarter view is lovely, and the side profile also handsome to my mind. It can't hide its big rear, but overall I like the fact it is distinctive and imposing. The car gets a lot of attention in London and most glances appear to be admiring (or perhaps I being optimistic!).

So after 3,000 miles I'm very much falling for the car "" in a very Teutonic fashion, you understand!

Interesting that you're getting 20mpg from the V8 turbo, I struggle to get 19mpg from the V8S in my KN, which is basically the same engine. And the KN Turbo is a lot worse! Presumably a combination of weight and CdA.
Am tempted to have a test drive, but on the other hand the KN comes inot its own in conditions like we've had the last couple of weeks.
 
Have to admit I was one of those who said it was ugly horrid looking car when I saw the first pics, but I was down at the Newcastle OPC and saw a couple in the showroom, and I have to now admit that I'm impressed, sales guy was obviously very excited to have them in, even though I was only there to pick up a water hose for the S so he knew I wasn't going to be buying one, but still spent 20 minutes talking about it [:D]
 
If any car needs to be seen in the metal before making a judgement, it's the Panamera. I certainly wouldn't be embarassed to be seen in one!

I also have a KN (GTS), and on the same commuting run the KN is geting around 17mpg. The big difference is the gearbox - PDK (being an automated manual) is more fuel efficient than an auto, and the PDK in auto mode shifts up to the higher gears much more quickly than the auto in my KN. And the Pan is about 200kg lighter than the KN, plus more slippery.

As soon as you wake up the turbos, however, the mpg figures start to equalize!
