Notchy Gear Change

Hi guys
Recently my gear change has become quite notchy particularly second and reverse. Any thoughts on what may be the cause would be gratefully received. I think the clutch is ok so that leaves the linkage and the gearbox.
 
If you first engage second gear to move back gears inside the gearbox moving then the shifter into the reverse clog should be a doddle.
How long since the last gearbox oil change ?

I would start with the "knuckle" in the linkage - located above the driveshaft on the passenger side of the gearbox.
Take the N/S/R wheel off to access it.
It is not a 5 minute job to DIY, - but it may be dry and getting tight due to exhaust heat and lack of grease. It needs to be dismantled to clean / grease properly. I emptied a can of WD40 over one without effect.


There may be other causes but this is an easy common one

Thanks for the replies.
The gearbox oil was replaced about 5 or 6 years ago, I think it was with synthetic oil.
Should it need changing again?
I don't know if the linkage has been lubricated as I don't service the car myself.
Would this be done as part of a 12000 mile service?
Is it common for these joints to need replacing?
 
I would change it anyway and lube the linkage as you will be suprised how much of an improvement it is.

No it wouldn't be done as part of a service. The gear oil has a service interval of 4 years so yours is well overdue a change. As 944 gearboxes are prone to noise and expensive to rebuild I change mine every 2 years as preventative maintenance.

It's not comon for these joints to need replacing but it is a moving part that is exposed to crud and after 20 years I would expect to repllace it. A genuine linkage is circa £120, but there are aftermarket short shift versions from about £50
 
Agree with Paul - the transaxle oil is a piece of piss to change and inexpensive so is worth doing regularly.

You mentioned short shift kits there and it's something I had been thinking about as I have always thought the throw is too long.
There are kits for both the front and back ends advertised ( Porscheshop do both), which do you think is better and do you have any opinion on who's is best?
 
Marty, Paul will no doubt answer your question, but I'd go standard for sure. There is a lovely action to the original linkage when in good condition.

I was going to comment to Paul that with 3.2 litres of torque - the gearbox is likely to be prone to noise ! [:)]

The kits for the back are the better ones. The reason is that they act right at the shaft that moves the selectors inside the 'box whereas the front ones act at the lever, so they "gear up" more of the linkage which amplifies any notchiness or other nasties it might have.

I have decided to try one of Jon Mitchells Road Shift kits as they seem to be very well made and will probably outlast me !

My personal view is that a new standard shifter at the rear is the best option. I had one a few years ago on my S2 and it is sooo sweet and light [:)] compared to the old worn out one. I have the roadshifter on my Turbo and it doesn't suit me at all, I will change it to a standard one at some point in the future.
 
Doh - you made me dig out all my old paperwork [&:]

It turns out it was 5 years ago in 2003 and it was actually a new gearstick lever at the front, not the rear linkage [:-]

Part number was 477 711 205 D1 t a cost of £29.61 + vat
