Notchy Gearbox 930

The 915 gearbox is a bit tight, until it is warm then its a lot better .

Some people change there brand gearbox oil to help as well .

SEE YA

I have lived with a similar issue for the past few months, particularly 2nd to 3rd, and have finally relented and put her into Unit 911 for 3rd synchro replacement. Car is due out this weekend, looking forward to a transformation!?

with a syncro change, does this involve dropping the gearbox? whats involved? What really annoys me is it is hard to get into first at the lights.....very aware of it. If I drop itinto 2nd then she'll glide into first and off we go.

Very happy with it otherwise.....

Yes, engine & gearbox out, and may as well get a service at the same time. Mine was notchy from 2nd to 3rd, and I have been told today that all 4 syncros have been changed, and the clutch.

Just had my 83 Turbo back from Unit 911, all 4 synchros replaced, 3rd dog & new clutch, and a whole series of other isues sorted. Drives like a new car, what a difference, cannot recommend enough.

I'd just offer a word of caution about tinkering with your gearbox. When I bought my car 6 years ago, occasionaly I would get a crunch when engaging 3rd gear or reverse gear. So, when a rocker slipped and the engine had to be taken out, I decided to get the gearbox rebuilt... And that's when all the troubles started..

I think all the 4 speed boxes crunch into reverse, mine was rebuilt and reverse still crunches, it's not synchromesh or something. When mine was going bad first was almost impossible to get, and going from third to second was painful, fast shifts were impossible without major crunches, after the rebuild it was better but you still have to change slower than with a modern gearbox. I've heard the Hargate (spelling?) shifter helps things a bit

great feedback.....mine crunches into reverse......I double declutch generally. Getting into first at the lights can be tricky. I tend to put it into 2nd first then it goes into 1st .

I had my 4 speed rebuilt by Bob Watson and new syncros certainly improved the to and from 2nd to 3rd shifts. This cost about £1 - £1.5k a few years back.

Key thing was to replace the bushes in the linkages and make sure that they were all set properly. This kept the changes tight and made a real difference on 3rd to 4th gear shifts.

Have since put in the G50 and it is immediately clear that this is a more modern design with easier shifts (hydraulic clutch) and greater tolerance to quicks gear changes.

The fabspeed when new is a thing of beauty to behold!. At tick-over it is much quieter than the Hayward and Scott it replaced, but put some serious exhaust gas through it and it is a different story.

With US$ f/ex rate I thnk it is good value for money, excellent fit/build and surprisingly efficient at a silencer bearing in mind it is straight-through. Gets my vote!

cheers Simon

changed gearbox oil, plus an additive went in and much improved..breathing better with an new k and n.....going to buy a single pipe fabspeed.....couldnt be bother cutting the valence for the sake of an extra pipe for show.

Have you seen the Fabspeed video of them cutting into the valence? (They make light of it.)

I suppose you could always fit a 'Zork Tube' instead [:D]

Reverse doesn't have a syncromesh so you must be stationary before selecting reverse.
The gears shoould never crunch unless you are shifting really quickly with a lot of force. If they crunch they need to be rebuilt, ignoring them will only cause more problems.

Of course, you need to have the work carried properly and if the wrong parts are fitted or if some adjustments are lost then you will have problems. Design911 tried to supply me with the wrong parts for my 915 assuring me they were the right ones... A-holes, my OPC confirmed that the part I needed was the part I requested and I bought it from my local OPC. Unfortunately you cannot buy the dog teeth from the OPC so you have to deal with an aftermarket company. Bert Gear of Berlyn Services can supply dog teeth and I bought the rest of the parts from the OPC. I always prefer to buy genuine parts from my OPC. Annoyingly also I had to buy one part from the USA as my OPC said they are NLA from Porsche... I also had to send the first part back as I wasn't happy with the finish of it too [:'(].

a major difference in the notchy gearbox has been changing the gearbox plus an additive.Cant afford a rebuild now and shes good for another 6k before I review it...I hope.

. On a different note, changed to a k and n air filter and cleaned the carbon from the butter fly valve and made a big difference to esp low end power. Had to re adjust idle which was a cow to get at......Have a Fabspeed single out let in my garage....it should make her breathe even better.

well I finally got to the point that the gearbox had to be done. Sent her to unit 11 over a month ago for a major overhaul. Gearbox, new headers, new turbo, 1 bar boost, fuel injection modded, sandblast and powder coat the under side, all rubbers changed, new suspension and shocks, the list goes on. Ripped out air condt. Petrified of final bill but it'll be the car thats the stuff of dreams. The gearbox wasnt the reason why I sent it to unit11, but she started billowing out black smoke....yes you guessed it the warm up valve stuck open and it was pouring fuel into the engine....it was my greatest excuse to get the car re done.
