Our November Club Night which will be at our usual venue (The Black Horse, The Vale, Chesham) will be a Table Top Rally which is being organised by R21 committee member Martin Foster. To give you some indication of what the evening will involve, Martin has produced some guidance notes which are posted below. Don't worry if it looks a bit complex just come along and have a go with the rest of us and have some fun.
For the benefit of those of you who are intending to have a go at the Table Top Rally at our meeting on 4th November I have produced the following information notes appreciating that not all will be accomplished navigators or even familiar with the basic format of road and table top rallies.
Maps used are ordnance survey 1:50000 series. I have 10 sets of maps available as flat sheets and a supply of roamers (essential map reading aid). It would be useful to be familiar with the features of 1:50000 maps and if anyone wishes to bring their own we will be using sheets 178 and 189 covering Kent, the Downs, the Weald and Romney Marsh.
I recommend you bring with you the following:
ï¶ 2B pencils
ï¶ Rubber
ï¶ Glasses if you need them and possibly a magnifier
The entire route will be issued at the start and will use a testing combination of simple techniques that many of you will be familiar with, namely
ï¶ Map references, some with directions of approach and departure
ï¶ Tulip diagrams, with balls and arrows
ï¶ Herringbone diagrams, with direction of travel shown
ï¶ Grid lines to be crossed in order
ï¶ Spot heights, used mainly as passage checks to check adherence to the prescribed route
I suggest that the route is plotted in pencil with a continuous line to the left of the prescribed route in the direction of travel (not on it)
Time allowed will be 1 hour after which lateness penalties will apply up to a maximum of 30 minutes, both to avoid boredom and allow me time to produce results.
Results will be based on least "fails" i.e. missed or incorrect passage check information and secondly least time penalties "" no protests will be entertained!!
You may start at any time but I suggest 8.00. Ideal team size is 2-3 including where possible a reasonably experienced rally navigator or perhaps just someone to fetch the beer!
For the less experienced, I will have available on the night an information sheet explaining the basic navigational techniques and how they work. You can examine it before you start and then use it for reference. There is also a lot of information on the net about road and table top rally navigation.
There will be some modest awards for the winners, the runners up and perhaps one "special" award for effort!
