Novice Track Day - 21 April - Brands Hatch

Hi - I see your in Staines.. I live in Ashford - but parents in Staines.. [:)]

Can I ask what determins a 'Novice' on these types of events.

I have done many track days now - both in organisers cars (the likes of Palmer Sport etc) and in my own cars (last was a 360BHP Saab 9000 Aero...

Thinking that this might not be for me this one - and I certainly wouldn't want to get in the way of others wanting a good first insight to track driving etc.

Hi

We lived in Ashord a few years ago although neither my wife nor I is from around here originally.

MSV (the organisers of this particular trackday) define a novice as someone who has not done more than three trackdays before.

James, do we have to take a helmet and arrange track day insurance etc? or is this done via MSV?

I quite fancy the 19:00 run ( depending on traffic and how long it takes to get there etc.....

James

Hi James

MSV will hire you a helmet for a few quid but you will have to arrange your own trackday insurance.

Insurance varies a lot, my standard policy includes up to ten trackdays a year but the excess goes up to £1000 for a track related claim. Or you can take out a one off policy to cover that particular day. Ken did the latter for last year's trip to Brands.

FYI, none of us will be covered for Prescott. Or at least I doubt we will be. Last year Grahame and I found that insurers won't cover the Prescott Hill so you run it at your own risk. Sort of adds to the fun!

Cheers

James

All to note - due to low track noise limits we hadn't sussed previously, we are now attending the event two days earlier on 19 April instead. Thanks to MSV for agreeing to move our date, and to James and Jason for realising we might not be allowed on track!

James:
I'd like to have a go at this and have now sorted my diary out for April. Prescott is fun, but always leaves me wanting more! Which session(s) are you doing, and do you know if there's still places? Scotty mentioned the 1900 run.

What's the latest on helmets? Several suppliers' websites appear to suggest that helmets that are Snell/BS compliant are no longer acceptable for track days and only MSA approved will do.

Hi Graham[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Ken has booked to do all four sessions whereas Craig and I are just doing the two 20 minute sessions at 17:40 and 19:00. Just the three of us going so far so plenty of room as far as R19 is concerned. I don't know whether MSV still have places available but I would think so from past experience.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I've done one of these 20 minute taster seesions with MSV before and they only checked that you had a helmet, not what type. Ken uses his motorcycle helmet and wasn't pulled up on it last time. I bought mine from GP Racewear in 2008 (cheapest they had) and it's been accepted at Brands so far.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]There is the germ of a plan to meet for lunch at MB World in Weybridge on the day and go in convoy from there.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]James[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

James:

Thanks for pulling this together...really enjoyed it, and with lunch at MB World a great day out, and good company.

Nice to make a Porsche presence amongst the Scoobys (but glad we weren't on the track at the same time!), and nice to see a couple of other 944s there.

Shed of the day? That Volvo 340 on Minilites and low profile tyres!

Bravest driver? A Fiat Panda!!! Well, why not?

Worth the trek in from Oxfordshire for me...looking forward to the next one.

Due to the size of a certain hot gas outlet at the back of my turbo it is absolutely pointless me even considering this. Watch out when the 924 is ready though.

Don't mention it, I had a fantastic time too!

All the Scoobys came out on mine and Craig's last session. But the fact is they were no match for us!

As for the next one; I've been working in Bristol today and Castle Combe is really no distance from home...

I think you'd be surprised. We were at a 102dB session, Jason came in at 98dB and I was only 96dB even with the Janspeed exhaust. So we'd have been OK for the strictest limit (98dB) if necessary and other sessions are 104dB so there's definitely a way in for your 944.

James

Official pics are on the photographer's website www.rawaction.ifp3.com, and you'll find us on the April 19 Taster Session. I'll be ordering a digital image later this week, and might get my head around downloading some from my camera.

We did discuss the possibility of trying to get both 944s and the 968 side by side in one shot (to save costs) but we'd have been black flagged.....

Come on guys, where are the pics?!

Jase and Ken took plenty of photos which I'm sure will be up to their usual excellent standard but like Graham says, check out the Raw website for the pro shots.
