Now I really like it (991 Turbo S)

Hi Guys

I suppose you though that you had heard the last from me, well you aren't that lucky!

After initial problems with having to replace all four PCCB's I have now had a chance to really try out the car. Porsche may well have said that the "clicking" (clunking in my case) was not a safety issue but the noise became unbearable when used at any speed on the French motorways. Two visits to the OPC were required before identification of the problem (although Porsche themselves were aware of the problem well before I collected the car) plus a further visit to install them.

Now that Max is run in and been touring and tracked I feel able to make a few comments.
I did not have a really good start as the PDI was skimped and not only were the rear carpets missing but the special tool supplied to attack the PDK switch in case of need was missing without even mentioning the PCCB problems below which denied me full use of the car for over a month.

Brief summary so that you do not have to read too much of my gibberish although I am happy to expand or answer any specific questions.

Likes:-

Absolutely amazing car. Performance a quantum leap from my 997 Turbo. (Well it feels like that although I don't suppose there is much in it.) Pity top quoted speed is still below 200mph, perhaps if the sound system was dumped it would be revised. Love PDK although at first was surprised when you braked positively to get around a corner and it blipped the throttle and changed down for me. I use it carefully on the road because the car speeds up a bit first especially downhill. Magic on the track though. Brake hard changes down twice ready for exit.

Lots of safety electrical gubbins make the car feel really safe and frankly it is very safe. Brakes work really well, allow hard braking as well as the ABS allowing maintenance of control which kept me out of the gravel when I became over enthusiastic on the straight.

Overall feel on the road, extra length and width not really welcome however it feels very stable and comfortable even without resorting to "comfort" tyre pressures. Not sure which bits are doing the work but the car turns in quicker and more accurately (rear wheel steering?)

Sheer slingshot acceleration, (Porsche Silverstone were talking sub 3 seconds 0-62 mph on well run in models) Personally I have no need for launch control and cannot see when I would use it as although I track my cars I only sprint my motorcycle.

Wheels really nice looking when clean. (but see later!)

Quality interior feels solid and looks the part. Comfortable seats infinitely adjustable with memory (same as 997)

Instruments give almost too many choices. I usually run on "vehicle" but when I want to monitor tyre pressures it is six clicks on the lever to bring them up then six clicks back again.

Adaptive cruise control, Though I would give it a try as it was standard on my girlfriends Jeep Cherokee Overlander but the Porsche one is really brilliant in traffic here. The Jeep shouts at you when it has decreased speed to about 20mpg basically saying you are in control now, whereas the Porsche brings you to a stop and puts the electric handbrake on! Just press the accelerator and off you go again.

Dislikes
No front mud flaps any more, regressive particularly on track as lots of rubber thrown up on the flanks now. (Incidentally anyone used Greased Lightning Showroom Shine? At last track day someone was using this which seemed to effortlessly remove rubber compared to the Porsche product I was using. I tried some on the Jeep and seemed really good but didn't want to try it on my car in case it is too abrasive)

Wheels terribly hard to clean inside without removal but:-
I watched the technician remove one of the centre lock wheels and my worst fears were confirmed. Removal and replacement is not a DIY job without spending quite a bit on special tools. Clive has published an excellent step by step article on this in Mays Porsche Post but it is beyond my comfort zone even if I bought the extra gear. The potential for damaging bits like bodywork and PCCB's is alarming.

Sunroof doesn't slide flush into roof, retracts up and over the roof and vibrates at speed, looks cheap and nasty

Passenger oddments tray deleted from sill (where bonnet and boot controls are on drivers side.
Door courtesy lights no longer bicoloured lens white to front red to rear, now just red.

Paddle steering wheel not multifunction, I really miss this facility and cannot understand why the two types are incompatible. Safety issue really and I hate reaching down to adjust Sat Nave radio etc.

Electric handbrake, hated at first and the OPC didn't know how to release it. RTFM. Getting used to it and see above re Adaptive Cruise Control.

Auto stop start, absolute pain in the rear over here, OPC says default cannot be off due to EU regulations. I don't live in the EU! When stopped if battery level goes to a certain point it starts on its own which is quite eerie.

Exhausts, I enjoyed cleaning the outside of the stainless steel pipes on the 997 which looked so bright compared to the inner pipe but these black "painted" pipes just look dirty inside and out all the time.

Turbo inlets look and are cheap, nasty and lacking the sheer "up yours" of the previous design.
Rear view amazing but spoilt by having so much of it black like the road.

Front spoiler good idea for our ferries but black makes it hard to see when down therefore no visual impact, it would be nice for it to be in contrasting or body colour or even have the "Turbo S" in a contrasting colour. Neither of my spoilers activate automatically and I really don't want the OPC experimenting on why so I am content to activate manually when required as not needed here at all.

Paint undercoat. I received a couple of tiny chips on the front spoiler and was delighted to find that the undercoat is bright orange so every little chip shows!

I am a nit picking git and most of my dislikes are rather minor so overall a great car, just wish it was cheaper!

Interesting write up and some irritations along the way already - good to see they're mostly sorted now. But still at this price point non-working spoilers is a bit rich!

Agree with you on a few points, the sunroof is not my cup of tea either, looks a bit odd tbh. I also can't see why multi function steering wheel can't be specced with paddles. No technical reason that I can see and aftermarket companies are happy to fit paddles to mf wheels. The stop/start is an odd one. I hated it to start with but then our Cayenne arrived with the same system. So now after a couple of years with both cars behaving in the same way I subconsciously expect other cars to do the same and am surprised when I come to a standstill in a friend's car and the engine doesn't cut out. Undercoat is also weird being orange, mine (Guards red) has white undercoat to highlight any stone chips.

Try reducing the size of your avatar even more and then reload.

Did you click on "apply" at the bottom of the page after you uploaded the avatar?

Yes, the stop start is tied in with "coasting" which I use on the motorways and it is quite eerie but I might just get used to it. However with our traffic (just like the M25 at 5.00pm) I just wonder what the stop/start toll is on the mechanicals. As far as the MF wheel and paddles are concerned it just seem a shame. No doubt it would cost but it is one option I would willingly pay extra for.

I will have another go at the avatar but I wasn't keen on the new one anyway!

Thanks Alan

I thought that I had and will have another go but I cannot find the pic now!

Alan you are a star!! I just have to make a decent avatar now.

Thanks

Good to hear you have managed to sort out some of the early issues and very interesting to read your comments.

I have also had a reasonable amount of time in mine and although we probably differ on the small issues I sense common ground on a number of the main points. My comments sort of follow your order.

I too think it an order of magnitude faster than the 997 though that is not supported by the numbers and must be viewed as highly subjective. I've had a few PDK cars now and this is the best box of the lot. Very intuitive and on the open road in Sport it knows better than me which is the optimum gear so I just let it get on with it.

Utterly stable even when I'm driving badly and asking unreasonable questions. However, I would like to have a better idea of which electronics are in play at any one time. PTV is the one I don't trust and fear it may be wearing out the rear brakes unnecessarily.

I had the geo checked ( Thread passim) and it was found to be way out ex factory with signs of tampering at the front struts. That is poor in my view on this sort of car.

I have binned some of the less useful screens in the driver information display and now have only 3 operational; Vehicle, Trip and TPM. Even in this reduced format the navigation junction details still pop up as and when giving best of all worlds with the screen you want only one click away (as long as you can remember which way to go [;)])

I've given up trying to clean the wheels and have accepted the black has now become a dirty grey to match the Agate paintwork. Like you I have no intention of "having a go" with the centre locks.

Still hate the electric handbrake, not helped by the fact it works in the opposite sense to common sense, if you see what I mean.

Stop start can be switched off in any mode ( I think) and disappears in Sport of its own accord.

I think the exhaust note is poor. In particular the resonant boom at motorway speed is a complete pain. Even pressing on you get more exhaust noise from the car in front, especially if it happens to be a 997 GT3. I was in Switzerland earlier in the week (in the 2.0L petrol Subaru Forester sadly) and was admiring the view on the Col du Pilon when a McLaren 12C went past. It sounded fabulous despite being turbo charged (the default reason P give for their dismal turbo sound).

Turbo inlets are cheap and nasty that is for sure, though again Agate (the motoring equivalent of "˜70's Magnolia emulsion) helps lose some of the nastiness.

Not sure how you know if the front spoilers are working unless you drive at high enough speed sufficiently close behind someone who can then check their rear view mirror and give the appropriate signal!

You don't mention lights but I really rate PDLS+ and would spec it ahead of most other options and only just behind heated seats.

I find it difficult to make a rational judgement on the price. It's a shed load of cash but most of the new contenders at this performance point are even more making it appear a relative bargain; until you see you can get a low miles 997 turbo S from an OPC for less than £80k in which case it seems way overpriced.

PS Need to change my Avatar.

Hi Nick, sorry I have take a long time to reply, I have annotated your comments with smilies, tried to change font and colour but failed!

[:D]Does feel faster and the PDK really is a joy.

[:D]Agree

[;)]Not thought about this and assume that it should be correct on a brand new car, not sure that this kind of expertise exists here but always loathe to do anything that might affect warranty.

[;)]Thanks, I might have a go at that

[;)]I will continue to damage knuckles!

Still hate the electric handbrake, not helped by the fact it works in the opposite sense to common sense, if you see what I mean.
[;)]Yes it is totally irritating to be the wrong way round, what happened to the ergonomics man the day it was designed? I is very embarrassing struggling to get it off when trying to disembark from a sloping ferry ramp. I don't use it most of the time.

Stop start can be switched off in any mode ( I think) and disappears in Sport of its own accord.
[;)]Yes but I always forget!

I think the exhaust note is poor. In particular the resonant boom at motorway speed is a complete pain. Even pressing on you get more exhaust noise from the car in front, especially if it happens to be a 997 GT3.
[;)]Not sure I agree, seems louder than my 997 but that was ultra quiet inside but I was told it sounds like someone ripping up a telephone directory from the outside when all out on the track.

Not sure how you know if the front spoilers are working unless you drive at high enough speed sufficiently close behind someone who can then check their rear view mirror and give the appropriate signal!
[;)]Checked both on French motorways and track by fellow travellers and track enthusiasts. OPC states that there are a lot of different conditions required to activate (Manual just states speed and sunroof position!) and as I don't want them fiddling around and trying to activate here (speed limit 40 mph) I am content to do it manually. Sport plus activates it perfectly. Just irritating it doesn't work!

You don't mention lights but I really rate PDLS+ and would spec it ahead of most other options and only just behind heated seats.
[;)]Not driven at night yet!

I find it difficult to make a rational judgement on the price. [;)]I must have thought it reasonable as I bought it!!

Cheers Michael
