Hi again,
If you looked, I hope you liked the photos of my new 944T SE.
I think its beautiful, and so smooth & cool to drive (I htink the speedo must underread though !)
It does need some work. What I think some people on here call the Birthday service. It has only done about 14k miles in the last 7 years which was the date/mileage of the last belt change I can see (at 89k) in the history - so my prioritiy is to get the belts done, and address a slight leak from the transaxle (where the cooler pipes meet the casing). Those are a bit daunting though, so this weekend I'm going to do a wheel bearing to get my eye in...
Any advice on donig the bearing would be welcome, but the big job that is the belts I want to start next weekend, and am a bit nervous, albeit determined!
I want to try and get it done in a day if I can, so would like to prepare by buying all the right bits/tools in advance.
So far I have:
2* Smooth rollers (one small all metal, one larger with the smooth roller surface bit being plastic)
1* Balance Shaft 'gear' - its a toothed metal sprocket.
1* Toothed roller (plastic sprocket mated to a metal bearing)
1* smooth tensioner roller - this one is all metal, and the inner part is drilled with an oval channel, and the 'stub' shaf tis hexagonal in cross section on one side.
Toothed balance shaft belt (toothed both sides)
No timing belt 'cos what was instock at eurocarparts when I phoned wasn't there when I got there (internet purchaser - grrrr).
...Pic in attachment
I've got a few concerns I was hoping for help with:
1. I was expecting the tensioners to be spring loaded, or have some obvious method of tension adjustment. The only thing here that looks adjustable is the oval channel in one of the rollers, and I can imagine it being tough to make that work.
2. Do I need any special tools (cheeseheads??) and will I need a big socket to undo the crank nut? If anyone knows the size in advance that would be a great help. I have pretty standard socket set / torque wrench / wobble bars etc.
2. I haven't bought any seals - is it worth getting some in case, and returning them if all is OK when I take the car apart? Anyone got any ideas on getting a kit of these and whether special tools needed to extract the old ones?
3. I have bought a waterpump and gasket, incase the old one is worn/stiff. It has one mating face adjacent to the main pipe attachment that is clearly blanked off, although there is a stud already installed on one(!) of the sides of the blanked off part. Does this mean I am going to have to drill it to install it on a turbo? - I assume the Turbo is most complicated, therefore has most hoses! The pump is also labelled as 82 - 88 - Is it definitely the right bit?
- any advice on health checking the old one would be great too. I'd like to be able to return the pump and get my £200 back if the old one is OK!
Heres a pic of the pump: Err, howdafunk do I upload more than one photo?
Lots of questions I know - apologies for overload. - Very excited about the new toy.
