Now worried about IMS failure

Can anybody tell this new boy how to find out if his 2007, 987, has an IMS and whether there is any risk involved??

The IMS was deleted with the introduction of the Gen II Boxster with the DFI engine for MY2009.

There are plenty of posts on this and other forums regarding problems associated with IMS/RMS failures. Later models such as yours benefited from improvements to the IMS bearing after some failures on the earlier engines and companies such as Autofarm offer bearing upgrades.

Hartech are also a good source of information on this and other problems associated with the 6-cylinder watercooled engines.

From MY2006 Porsche fitted an even larger IMS bearing, and failures of these are extremely rare. The LN retrofit ceramic hybrid bearings (used by Autofarm and others) can't be retrofitted to these engines.

I believe a precaution is to inspect the oil filter regularly for any metallic debris which may indicate bearing failure.
