number plate leakage

New member
during a day of fiddling i noticed that there are two holes cut behind the numberplate, presumably for mounting the plate in countries where the garage doesn't just screw two self tappers through the bodywork. Anyhow there were signs of water coming in form said holes so i bunged them up with dumdum. depending on the level of the car (or lateral g) water can dribble sideways to either arch or central under the spare. no major worry but i prefer water outside rather than in so i thought i'd share the discovery as ive never heard it mentioned before.

below is an image of the now plugged holes.

my day was nearly spoilt when someone decided to use a leaf blower on the grit on the pavements right after id washed it, covering it with a layer of grit dust, but it rinsed off ofter i calmed down. Its still on the 'winter tyres' with teles as i havent got round to buying fresh rubber for the cup wheels i treated myself to.

The cars should have a registration plate mounting bracket, which should be attached through the holes that you have mentioned. If you have a number plate thats mounted to the body with self tapping screws, then it has been bodged (badly damaging the car).

were they all like this from new? Presumably fitted by the dealer?

They all had the brackets, yes. I believe that it was a factory part, but because I didnt ever buy a car brand new: I cant be certain.

Simon, they all did come with a bracket, I have a couple here. Will try and get a picture. Thats why the plate doesn't sit flush with the inside of the valance,

Im guessing it will be a fairly standard part available from an OPC.

All the cars i've owned have had self tappers securing the numberplate, but never had a new one. The numberplates have 'stirlings.co.uk' written on them, who apparently are 'The Low Mileage Porsche Specialists with a "Passion for Perfection"' but not when it comes to fitting numberplates it seems.

I think its still driveable [:D]

A little melodramatic yes, but you know what I mean... [:D]

Every car I owned before had them fore and aft, but now they all seem to have been discarded by bodgers (the sort of people who take out four screws, lose two, cross-thread one and replace another with a wood screw - obviously) for an unfathomable reason. None of the three cars that I have now have a mounting bracket between them...

IIRC theyre coated black and a sort of protracted 'H' shape Alasdair?
