Hi Everyone

I' m off to the ' Ring tomorrow for a three day driving course, was planning on taking the M3 but it' s not behaving itself and I' m not 100% confident with the way it' s driving at the moment.

So, 1 year ahead of schedule I' m going to take the RS instead, hurrah! Not looking forward to the Belgium motorways or the 32 degree forecast with no air-con though.

Full report and pictures when I get back on the 18th

Hi Mark

It' s the 41st International " Better Driving" School run by BMW Germany. This will be my third year. It' s a three day event and they split you into groups of about 15 with a Ring instructor each and you learn a section at a time. Cost for the course itself is about £700.00 (which has shot up due to the exchange on the €) Ferries (x2 for me) and hotels add about the same again, plus beer (lots) and petrol (even more).

Experience outweighs any costs though [:D]

You are supposed to take a BMW but there is always a few Porsches, Audis and Mercs

You are taking the right the car for the VERY JOB IT WAS INTENDED, enjoy it and be careful out there. Look forward to a full report and pictures please.

Ah, Mark, you' ve done it too!!

For those who dont know, one of the more light hearted elements of the " Better Driving Course" is too ram a new 3 series at 40mph into a stretch of Armco to simulate what to do if you have brake failure on a mountain pass. (Glancing blow, foot off all pedals, turn into the barrier if I remember)

Initially wary, we were soon slamming the 320i in the barriers to slow down, which is some experience. Apparently they went through 5 cars last year. What we thought were " good" cars were infact ex-development ones due for the crusher anyway, so we didnt feel too bad afterwards.

Would welcome some feedback. It took me 19 minutes and 57 seconds to do one lap last summer...........in motorhome with family and dog...

Respect to anyone who does the ring at that time of year.

It's bad enough in the dry, god knows what it would be like after the track
is covered in wet leaves or even ice and snow. !!!

I'm going to be spending the next 6 months on my X-box trying to work out what corners are coming next, for when i go agian next year !!

I should be going with Autotrack on the 11th and 12th Nov.......as a passenger. Unless we have a stunning change in the weather and I succome[:D]

RSR (Paul),

I'll be at the RMA Ring trip in November in your old silver RS.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the weather I've been to the Ring in November for the past 4 years we've only had one washout day.

However we plan to get there for lunchtime on the Sunday (public day) to increase our chances of some decent lapping should the weather not be in our favour later.

So hat flavour of RS are are bringing?

Paul

It's a crime to say it on this forum I know, but I have a 993 RS with 325bhp. I thought the 993 might be more forgiving, but I think my heart is going to over rule that decision and take a 964 RS Clubsport with a set of Corsa R's.

I'm looking forward to seeing my old car. I bought it when it was only 4 years old with 14,000 miles. I'm sure you've kept it up together.

It's now closer to 50K miles and still going strong!

I've had the paint work refreshed by 9M over the summer so it's looking rather good at the moment.

Corsa R's at the Ring in November!!, I'll stick to the trusty my S02 winter tyres.

Are any of you guys who are going to the 'Ring taking a passenger with a clean driving license?

The reason I'm asking is because I need to bring a 993 Turbo home and I don't fancy fitting a tow bar to the RS.[8D]

Just goes to show what a selfish hobby we all lead.

What are the other 2 cars going from your party. There's got to be a Caterham in there somewhere.

I'm meeting up at the tunnel with a couple of trackday regulars driving a 993 GT2 and a 964 RS with 340bhp. Both cars and drivers are really quick.

a clean driving licence.........does anyone have one of those any more?

mine has been cleaned 3 times Paul, does that qualify?[8D]

RSR (Paul)

Fireblade powered 7 (trailered) and a Yellow 993 C2 with RS supension and various engine mods. Unfortunatly our ex 993T4 (now GT3) friend can't join us this trip.

I suspect I'll know the GT2 and 964RS cars and drivers (faces rather than names) I assume their Ring regulars from the Wheeltorque days.

Are you travelling over on the Sunday? If so are you planning any public laps, we've got a 8am chunnel crossing to should be at the Ring for early afternoon.

I assume your staying at the Tiergarten?

Paul
