OBC Oil Failure Message

Tizzy

New member
Slight panic today when shortly after starting my drive home from work the OBC beeped and displayed a picture of an oil can with the ominous word "Failure” on the check message. Quick check of oil pressure - between 4-5 so all ok, engine running sweetly and no warning lights so carried on for 15 miles or so my refuel stop. Once back in let the oil measurement chart run, normal level 2/3 bars off the top. Message had gone on restart of engine and didn’t reoccur over the remaining 10 miles home. Had a look in the handbook - P76 makes reference to it likely being a failure of the oil-level display - as it says it gives a message on the OBC. Certainly the low oil level or pressure warnings weren’t being shown, so I hope this is what it was, but any reassurance very welcome!! ????

Thanks Chris

Quick rule of thumb for first time offence on any thing electrical particularly warning lights. Pullover turn off engine pull out key for 10+ seconds(reset) restart car. If the warning light has gone then don't worry about it.

If you don't...... you worry about the length of time the light was on......b4 you get to your destination.

Ha! Agreed there, and that’s what I did when I refuelled - and it’s not been back since. Fingers crossed it was the oil measurement readout getting its knickers in a twist and nothing more sinister!

The oil pressure sensors are a fairly common fault, giving exactly the symptoms you describe. There are two contacts on the sensor - one for the gauge, and one which is a simple switch for the warning. The gauge may be reading correctly, but a fault can come up if the switch sticks or fails. If it happens more frequently, get the sensor changed. They aren't massively expensive, but tricky to get to, and it helps to have the right tools.
