Obc retofit

Hi guys

Just a quick post to let you all know about an obc retrofit

I managed to get hold of a second hand mph/mpg tachometer and contol stalk

Fitting was simple and an easy diy

First you remove the old non obc tachometer. This just pulls out the dash, mine was a bit stiff at first but gentle levering soon had it free. it's easier if you remove the cowling behind the steering wheel.Next unplug the old tachometer

rummage around behind the hole where the tachometer used to be, your looking for a cream coloured plug. 26way I think...

The new obc is a bit deeper than the old non obc tachometer so it may take a bit of giggling to get it in.( I have club sport steering wheel so it was maybe a bit tighter). Make sure you plug in the cream coloured plug into it before pushing into dash!

The control stalk is held on with 2allen screws and is very easy to add. The wiring drops down by the streering column and just plugs in to the existing loom.

The only thing I have not done is to add the sensor for outside temp as I don't yet have it. I will get this asap. The wires that do the outside temp are pins 8 and 10 on the cream plug so tracing the wiring should be easy!

I had to make a small cut in the lower steering cowling so the new stalk fitted but there is an original part you can get for this. I will probably get this just to keep things right (I am fussy!!)

Basically that's it....plug and play

I have a wiring diagram if anybody is interested.... It's only a hand drawn one but it tells you everything you need to know.

very pleased with the results.

Mmmm what can I do next!!

Just a quick note.....

The cream coloured plug was difficult to find on mine it was well hidden. I actually found mine behind the speedo! I thought I had to go through all the wiring to retrofit. It was only when I searched harder I found it. Also the seller of the obc was very helpful in telling me what I needed to know. He did the drawing so all credit goes to him. Although in the end I didn't need it.

Well done Tim. I did the same a couple of years ago. As you say, it's plug and play as long as you can find the plug....mine was neatly tie wrapped to the loom behind the speedo too. The only thing I got wrong is that I didn't realise that the OBCs were mph or kmh specific....I got a kmh one but didn't realise until the display burst into life! [8|]

On the lower steering cowling part , I have an OBC by default and I wanted a new lower steering cowling due to an old alarm drill hole, but I was unable to order an original OBC cowling from Porsche ......obsolete item!! Ebay did the trick though via a STD one, and I then modified it to fit..

Sounds like you 964 guys are very lucky having these hidden plugs. By 993 times Porsche were saving copper and putting in a loom with less wires if you did not spec the OBC - so, if you want to retrofit, there is loads of wiring to do on our cars (including messing with the plug into the ECU)[]

I'd really like to have a temperature gauge for winter driving.

Yep 993 is more involved but still not that hard to do, just time consuming. You need the plug that fits into the tacho as this is not available from Porsche. This would involve finding a scrap car and cutting off the required plug! Not many breakers would allow that to happen these days and the would probably want to sell you the entire loom!. I do have the spare plugs as they came with my 'kit'

other than that it's just a case of routing most wires behind dash panel and to stalk, but as you say you need 1wire from ecu and another from diagnostic plug. I was prepaired to wire mine in but in the end i didn't need to.

Where did you source your OBC from Tim and how much (if you don't mind me asking)?

When ever I've seen them for sale they have either been metric or £350 (or both), which seems a bit steep to me.

Got mine of pistonheads...£175 Inc postage for kit. Bargin really as like you say they are difficult to get hold of.

I think the guy has another one but it's a turbo one so will have boost selection, but I think it's a mph one though.
