OBC

Hi guys, am thinking of changing my 01 'S' for an 04 'S' but the new car doesnt list the OBC which my current car has. (outside temp, fuel economy etc)

Is OBC a standard feature on the 04 car?

Thanks

Rick

was an option on the 03 S and I'm pretty such it was the same for 04... not sure about the 04 Boxster 550 Spyder Anniversary version though.

It can be retrofitted though. You wouldn't get the new style "dot-matrix" display, but you would get the functions of the older model. You can also retrofit cruise.

a) If the option was only £155 then maybe it wouldn't cost too much to do it yourself.
Has anyone successfully retrofitted OBC on a 2003 2.7 986 ?

I like to be able to display fuel economy (MPG), saves me calculating it after each fuel up each week.
The MPG is a good indication of any problems with the car you may have.

Outside temp is also useful in the winter, so you can keep your speed down when the roads freezing...

b) Can the Durametric tool be used to enable the OBC option ? [;)]

Here a few sites with info on enabling the OBC:

Good site with OBC Hack page

Many thanks guys, especially Richard you should go on mastermind!

The new style dot matrix dash display is really desirable to me, when did this start being an option?

Cheers

Rick

just to confirm - are you saying that the OBC can be enabled on any boxster regardless of age?

The OBC can be turned on in any 1997-2004. It is in the instrument cluster. With a PST2 or PIWIS you change the coding of the cluster to turn it on. The instrument cluster changed in 2001. On a 2001-2004 you will not see anything when it is turned on unless you retrofit a switch or stalk. Once the retrofit is done then the OBC displays look like a 2001 with the OBC option.

The dot matrix cluster started in 2002. You only got the dot matrix display if the car came with the OBC option. The dot matrix cluster is different than a non OBC cluster. If you want a dot matrix cluster then you need to buy it and put it in.

It will be difficult to find an OPC to turn on the OBC on a 2001-2004, as they will say it cannot be done like it was on 1997-2000. That is when you make friends with Richard as he knows how to do it and has done it.
