occassional smoke from exhaust on start up.

Hello

I've just bought my wife a 4 year old Boxster 2.7 from a main dealer, and occasionally on a cold start up there is a billow of smoke from the exhaust. After enquiring from the dealer about this, he said even new ones do this sometimes.

Is this correct or do you think I am being told a little lie.

Very occasionally my wife's 2.7 will smoke for a few seconds on start up.

I wouldn't worry unduly - keep an eye on the oil consumption.

When we bought her car we did the deal right at the end of the day when the OPC salesmen were starting to move cars into the rear compound for overnight safety. After seeing how much oil smoke was produced by those cars I decided not to worry about the occasional puff.

Happens occasionally, nothing to worry about!
As long as you occasionally do your oil check and see nothing untoward, forget about it.

It's not a problem, just a feature of the flat 6 engine and the way the oil collects after it has been standing. Don't worry - my Boxster has done it since new 7 years ago.

I agree. My 2.7 does it occasionally. Nothing to worry about normally. I understand it's oil seeping past piston rings in the flat 6 engine when it's left standing. Doesn't happen in an in line engine which you find in most cars because the pistons are up in the air above the oil.

Worth checking though - had the same reply from my OPC and the engine was getting through well over a litre of oil a month. After much pressing and a formal consumption test, they accepted the engine was faulty and it's just been rebuilt (under warranty, thank god!)

Doesn't make sense oil on startup ? Had many VW Beetle's in past and never had smoke on start up - flat four engine ! However my Boxster developed this annoying habit for a shortwhile when the oil was overfilled - had to drain the excess out - and now problem has gone. Generally I think this is a symptom of air separator and oil in manifild issue which once engine stops, feeds into the intake system and resides there until startup. I have never seen a new Porsche blow smoke out on startup - and frankly would not expect this to be a design feature.

I have a 2.7 2000 and there is always a puff of blue smoke on cold start up. Perfectly normal.

Mine uses no oil
