Is anyone else going on this event ? I understand it was intended for 'classic cars' , so have booked into it.
This will be the first outing on circuit for my 1969 911E/S ex Peter Andrews car , and will probably still have the standard slippy vinyl seats and belts , also the first time I have ever been to Goodwood !
Any advice , apart from belting up tight ?

Keep off the grass......................................its bad for old bones !
It doesn't do the paint much good either - there isn't much run off [:'(]

Well, there is quite a bit of "runoff" - but a lot of it ends in rather high banking clothed in beautifully-mown grass. So that when you go off, you sort of travel upwards a bit before overturning.

Seriously, its a terrific track. Probably unique.Have fun.

Report back from the day!
It was very cold , anytime spent out of the car was best spent in the Jackie Stewart pavilion adjoining the pits , keeping hands firmly in pockets so that fingers continued to work [:)]

There were less than 25 cars participating , of which 4 were Porsches , my 911E was the oldest followed by a real RS , a 3.2 Clubsport and a GT3 Mk 2 .There were a similar number of very historic looking Jaguars , early 1950's vintage, and 2 or 3 GT40 replicas....not all in good running order [:D] . Photoshoot at end did feature my car in the line-up , Mark Hales commented on the moth-eaten upholstery of the rear seats ( well they are never used! )

Hero of the day was probably the GP Connaught driver , seated with legs either side of the gearbox and a lonely clutch pedal on the right....parts of him must have got very warm , not a good car to be lined up behind in the pit lane as
1 it had to be jacked up at back on a trestle and a starter gun shoved in the front for several attempts with back wheels spinning in air
2 it was fuelled on methanol and long blue flames were spat backwards if the engine chose to fire

Villain of the day was the mechanic who totalled the owners historic jag racer in what appeared to be a head-on with tyre wall , Lavant straight , during a period when sporadic rain was making track greasy. I was out in same session and had just been overtaken by it after Madgwick....fortune favours the cowardly...

Anyway , really enjoyed the day , Goodwood appears to suit the early 911 , my car was good in the hands of my instructor Ian , who had more confidence in the handling than I did , but I will learn how to drive smoothly , honest.

The worse bit of it all was driving home to central London in the dark and the wet....I couldn't really see where I was going and one of the wiper blades detached itself ( driver side of course ) . Makes it more of an adventure I suppose after the boredom of a modern car ...[:D]

Hi Patrick , thanks for the advice !
I was so impressed with Goodwood ,and the need to improve [;)] , that I have booked into the PCGB trackday on 15 November . It looks like this will be the last outing of the year , and judging by todays weather its not going to be best of conditions......
PS I did return the car to Jaz , just before the Octane day , and had a tune up as it was lurching a lot in traffic. Plugs were very sooty , and although they probably had not seen many miles they were replaced and usual tweaks done , mainly a leaner fuel setting and reconnection of vacum advance , so a different point on the spectrum of options to what was presumably JZ Machtech setting. Now requires hand throttle for both cold and lukewarm starts. Still lurches in traffic if revs drop below 2400 eg changing up from 2nd to 3rd , but behaves on track where revs tend to be higher.
Will report back after 15th [:)]

Hand throttle bit sounds normal for first 2/3 miles when cold , lurching in traffic doesnt .........its all trial and error with these old dears !

Cheers Vic , meant to go out in the old girl today as it was actually dry and bright....but I fell down basement steps yesterday and landed on elbow - OUCH.
After a restless night the missus insisted I get it sorted , she doesn't like blood on the bedsheets.....
Went to see medics today , too late for stitches it seems but nothing broken apparently even though bone could be spotted. Nurse prodded me to check for broken bits as an alternative to x-ray and as I didn't flinch ....!!! ...she then applied glue to skin plus medics gaffer tape to hold it together and stop me looking at the exposed bit of bone [] ..the patch up also seemed to staunch the bleeding so a good result all round [:)]

Should be fit for elbow bending in the Globe tomorrow night - see you there - followed by wheel winding on Sat at Goodwood , lucky it wasn't my gearchange arm [:D]

John -you obviously need to appoint a driver for Saturday!! [;)]

I'm free.[:D] Speak tonite....

Cheers Mel , I think its really decent of you to offer to drive , where else in the world but the PCGB forum would you encounter such chivalry ???

Elbow held up well at the curry night and indeed early 911's were a popular topic of conversation . I cannot remember all the pearls of wisdom dispensed by Vic , but do remember that the tuning of MFI engines can be verrah verrah tricky ......'Captain Kirk , I canna get nae more power from the wee beastie'...[;)]

Octane mag have now put a short video clip up on their site , which actually opens with a static shot of my car [:)]......and for aficionados of historic cars there are shots of Connaught GP racer , Jag XK , Ford GT40 , as well as the odd Porsche complete with soundtrack [:D] ....link below and click on first Goodwood video on list
