OCTOBER 2009
The Hadley Bowling Green Inn on the Last Tuesday of the Month. Post Code WR9 0AR

An eventful month, all in all. We started off with a Breakfast Meet at Cosford. I left Adam to organise this and I think he did a grand job, in getting all of 38 cars to the event.
We all enjoyed the large sausage and bacon buns, plenty of coffee, before many then ventured around the museum. A good day out in fine weather.
Thank you Adam.

Sunday the 18th, saw several of us at Paul Howells' place at Holly Barn, to see his current table of racing Porsches. Paul, Jane and Graham looked after us well and Paul gave an interesting tour of the cars, with lots of history. This raised many questions regarding oils, wear and tear and life span in racing.
Paul showed us several parts that had broken during racing, causing severe damage in some instances, including one engine block, where a con- rod had broken through the side.
I'm hoping that we can get some photographs and explanations in the next PP, as the postal strike is messing up my system at the moment.
Any way, thanks, Paul, Jane and Graham for another great day out and the weather.

Then came some "˜grease monkey' work, with Adrian's 3.2 Carrera, failing MOT with a worn out rear wheel bearing. We bought a new one from Porscheshop, along with new break pads and handbrake shoes.
The bearing is a big b****r, 45mm deep and around 70 mm.. in diameter.
In an official workshop, no doubt, they have facilities to remove the old bearing, insitue. We had to take the whole of the suspension arm off, to remove the old bits and fit the new one. I left the new bearing in the freezer all night and after playing a propane torch around the alloy casing, it dropped straight in without any pushing. Perhaps a more detailed report elsewhere for those interested.

My 924, now has the head off, I am in the process of removing two exhaust manifold studs that have sheared off virtually level with the face of the casting. Then there is much cleaning and polishing to do before it is put back together. I don't think the head has ever been off since new. There is a good half millimetre of oily soot deposit on the insides of the inlet manifold ports. When these are cleaned and polished, it may go "˜faster'!
For those with ambitions, we had to use almost three foot of lever to undo the head bolts. They are what is known as "˜stretch bolts', which literally means that they stretch when tightened up and are not re-usable.
The tightening process is to tighten them to the recommended torque and then turn them all 180 degrees, which puts on the final stretch. All this is done in a certain order, bit by bit. Strangely enough, these bolts are not fitted to the "˜Turbo'.

On the 24th, "˜Porscheshop', held an open day for 924/944, I went along as the only 924 representative, although in my "˜Cavalier', the rest being 944's with RS Paul McNulty acting as shepherd. I was able to purchase several gaskets and head bolts for the above work on my 924.

"˜Porscheshop' are also sponsoring a visit to the Nurburgring next September, in conjunction with PBC Motorsport, who, I understand, from Rob the owner, that they have arranged around seventy visits for groups, over the last three years. This looks a good event, at a reasonable cost and R13 and R9 are looking towards organising a party to go with them.
See seperate post.
Look at nurburgring-trips.com or porscheball,com.
Date of the trip is 10th to the 13th September 2010.

Our next meeting at the Bowling Green, Tuesday 24th November will include a talk by Rob, on the trip to the Nurburgring. Something not to miss.

This year, we held our annual Lunch, in March and I think we shall do this again. Hopefully, we should be in better weather and give a chance for the "˜Long distance runners' to have a pleasant Sunday drive to us. Date to be agreed. After all, wherever we hold this, someone will have to travel a distance.
All the above, were discussed at our meeting this month with much interest.
Also a request for another visit to Meguiars, at Daventry, which I am arranging.

We had a surprise visit from John Bastin, who now lives in the south of France and is only able to see us once or twice a year. John used to be regular, when we met at the Verzons, in Herefordshire. I have known him for over thirty tears as we both used to fly at the Herefordshire Gliding Club, at Shobdon. He still flies, with a share in a glider in Spain. Given my time again, I would choose two wings over four wheels anytime. You can do three dimensional things in gliders. If you do them in cars, the insurance people get excited !

Forthcoming Events.

November 24th,
Talk on the Nurburgring and mince pies and coffee.

February 23rd
Presentation on leather work and upholstery.

March 30th
Classic Rallying. Meanwhile, time flies and I will have to go to "˜stud'.
