Odd Calipers

Evening all,

Having got the beast back from the rebuild I have been paying it some real attention over the weekend.

I notice I seem to have 2 different calipers on the front wheels.![&:]

They both are physically the same size, however the left front has a smooth finish and white 'decal' and the right front has a raised porsche logo..

Incidentally the left 'decal' caliper looks alltogether newer than the 'raised' rh caliper..

I understand calipers need replacing sometimes if they fail or whatever, but is this something to worry about?. They are both the same size i think mid blacks (big black?)..

I can only think that Porsche made two types of caliper for the 250turbo.. OR I actually have totally the wrong calipers and need help quick..

Cheers in advance

Charlie

Only '91 turbo have the decal-type M030-sized caliper.
Your front right caliper may have been replaced with an older unit.

The raised lettering calliper is an earlier calliper, fitted to 964/944S2 it changed to the smooth type around 90-91 I think. When I asked Porsche about the difference I was told the reason for the letter removal was to save weight! I actually think it was a cost saving in the casting process.

What is very important is that pistons are the same size and in the same configuration, ie small one in the same place. Without checking I can't remember which way around they are but I think it is the small piston at the top, larger piston on the bottom.

Thanks chaps,

Will have a chat with the indy when I nip back in there in a month for a check up following surgery.

Hopefully it should all be OK. Both rears have black 'decal' calipers, which are smaller.

So Ill assume the front right got changed at some stage..Would like to get the correct unit if possible, and then get the pair totally refurbed up to new..

now looking for a late spec caliper [:D].. the never ending list begins...

Cheers

To add to what has gone before ... you need equal braking performance on both sides - this is VERY important as you will spin under hard braking if you don't!

However, the MOT will test the braking performance and if there is a difference of more than a certain percentage across an axle then it will fail, regardless of the absolute braking figures. If it has been like this since before the last MOT then you should be OK. (Of course, both sides should be identical in both power and in terms of relative braking performance for a given pedal pressure, and I am guessing that the MOT test is pretty crude in the way it measures this. You may want to find a higher standard to have it tested to ... )

Oli,

Regards the MOT I had this done last month.. The braking system came under scrutiny as I needed a rear pipe replacing, and the handbrake cable properly adjusting to pass..

Also I had it serviced recently and they changed the brake fluid and Im guessing the guys would have raised this as a point of concern when bleeding the brakes?

I will have a chat with the guy and see what he suggests.. Im still far more keen to just stump and get the correct one though..[:(]

It definately sounds like the right front has been replaced with an earlier calliper at some point. As long as it is the same sized 'Medium Black' from another 250 Turbo then it's not a problem, apart from the aesthetics and if it niggles you.

A simple solution would be to grind off the raised lettering, repaint it black then stick on one of Ricks excellent decals from www.highgatehouse.co.uk

In the meantime the rest of us will make sure to gather round your right front wheel and point at the non matching calliper whenever you attend a club event :ROFLMAO:

Good stuff, ill not worry when bowling into a hairpin now..

So I know im in for some stick then when I come along to an event.. unless....[]

Cheers
Charlie
