odd clutch/gear thump - any thoughts

I posted on pistonheads about this but never really got any clear opinions. My 968 came with a new clutch which was, and remains after 750 miles, a little heavy and stiff. When I'm stationary and move into 1st gear, on occasion there is an audible and palpable thump through the base of my seat. Initially I thought it was simply that I wasnt depressing the clutch pedal far enough. but it actually relates to the speed at which I enter 1st gear. If I depress the pedal leisurely and move into gear slowly, all is well. Push the clutch pedal quickly down and move the gearstick fast and I get the thump. It occurs always exactly at the point when the gear lever enters the gate for first gear.

otherwise, the car is brilliant. any thoughts?

Tim,

I would not describe the clutch on my car as heavy or stiff. However, when engaging first gear I can certainly feel a slight thump - I just consider it character[:D] Not sure if that is any help !

I had a new clutch fitted to my Sport ..
Before fitting it was very heavy + stiff....
after fitting it was as light as a "feather".... a revelation.....
I suggest taking it back to whoever fitted it + getting them to check it out...
It should be light + definately not stiff.......

Is the "bite point" of your clutch near the floor.?????
If so you may find that you havnt pushed hard enough to fully disengage it.....

HI, I JUST ASKED OUR MECHANIC, (I WORK IN AN INDEPENDANT GARAGE THAT SERVICES PORSCHES ALONG WITH MY 968 SPORT) HE SEEMS TO THINK THAT A PROBLEM WITH THE TORQUE TUBE OR TRANSAXLE BUSHES WOULD CAUSE THIS SORT OF NOISE. HE MAY BE WRONG OF COURSE BUT HOPE THAT HELPS.

ALL THE BEST

It may also be something to do with the dual mass flywheel, not that this will be good news [:(]

Hmmm. I shall pretend I didnt read that! sods law being what it is, the car hasnt done any thumping for a couple of days now, despite me forcing the issue. But my local independent seems pretty unfazed by it (though of course he generates, rather than pays, the bill). He did mutter about popping the clutch out for a look, especially as its still rather heavy, but reassured me its a doddle compared to my old 944 (!!!)
i must study my warranty very carefully!
