Odd Control Arms

Thought maybe someone could help me on this one...

After reading the posts here I decided to get my control arm ball joints done by David Gilmour ( I actually read an article about it a few years ago in 911 Porsche World)

At the same time I was going to replace all the rubber mounts etc and replace the tie rod ends (and maybe get a recon PS rack as mine weeps a bit)

Anyway, after chatting to David, he said get them off and send them up so I just took them both off. I am no mechanic, but they looked pretty sad.

They looked a bit odd side by side so I rubbed off the raod grime and looked at the part numbers. One was 944-341-150-02 and was silver and the other was 951-341-149-10 and a gold colour.

Surely this cannot be right! I checked on PET but can't find the part number.

One of them (944-341-150-02) has a mounting on it that I assume the air dam fits on as I see it in the 968 part of PET.

I am now a bit stumped as I have 2 odd arms, a car on stands and don't know which I am supposed to have (although I assume it is the 951-341-149-10 as the other side had the wrong shock on it - see my other post)

Does anyone have a pair of control arms to fit an 87 turbo as I know many of you race and may have upgraded or can anyone point me in the right direction for buying some?

Thanks a lot.

Morning,

Doesn't matter, someone has previously replaced one of your control arms. Most probably the one that is now the 968 item. The other arms are no longer available from Porsche as they have been deleted, only the 968 arm is available but the fitting is exactly the same with a slight change to the ball joint itself and the mounting points for the air dam.

Coincidentally my car also has an original arm on the O/S but a newer replacement 968 arm on the N/S ! :)

So I wouldn't worry about them having different part numbers, my control arm part numbers do not appear on PET either.

See my previous post on the ball joint thread http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=156503&mpage=2&key=#

Theres a good article floating around by Hartech which discusses the changes Porsche made to the control arms and in particular the 968 version. I will dig it out and post the link when I'm back at home.

I've also just purchased a pair of 968 arms off ebay so will check the part numbers on those ;)

Thanks dlknight.

I was getting all stressed last night trying to find a set ($1000 + was not helping :) )

They do look different though when placed on top of each other..the '968' one is slightly longer and a bit wider. It is also in worst shape.
I am assuming that the 150 and 149 are for R and L..

Does anyone rate the Rennbay repair kits? They look pretty simple to fit, or is it best to depend on David Gilmour (i.e. a pro.)

I will clean them up and have a proper look later today with a measure.

Hi,

You can't rebuild the 968 arms yourself as they have rolled edges on the bottom of the ball joint pocket. I have used the rennbay kit to rebuild my N/S control arm and it failed a couple of months later. I assume this is because the ball joint pocket itself was worn and "out of round". So I would not personally use the rennbay kit unless I knew that the control arm I was rebuilding was in good condition.

Hi Dave,

I looked at my arm before reading your reply and thought "that looks different I wonder how I can get that out.."

Do you know if David Gilmour does or anywhere else?

There is one on ebay, and I was thinking of getting it so I had a matching pair then refurbing both and selling the 951 one to help fund the 968 one.

Hi,

From memory I think that the method Hartech and David Gilmour use is to re-machine the control arm so its not a problem for them. I will find that article which describes the ball joints and rebuild process for you.

Hi
Just in case anyone wants to know, Barry at Hartech does the 968 for 150 + vat.
David in Scotland can't do them.

Hi all,

Here you go the ball joint article I promised http://dialspace.dial.pipex.com/prod/dialspace/town/pipexdsl/s/asco96/944t/balljoints.htm
