Odd noise from engine

Hi,
I have a 3.3 turbo and I have noted over the last couple of weeks that I get a 'clack' on sudden engine speed changes. I have tried with clutch in and out and this seems to not effect, it is deffinitely engine speed dependant and not road speed. The sound is noticeable when sat out of gear when the engine is revved, when accelerating hard and is the final sound you hear when it is switched off! The sound only happens once and is not a clack, clack, just a single clack!

It sounds to me like slack in a shaft or other rotating part, but it doesn't seem to effect performance (or not to date it hasn't).

Just wondering if anyone had experienced something similar before I start taking things apart?

Ok, 2 very different ideas! I'm just about to fit a set of new manifolds and a new Tial waste gate so I will shortly be able to confirm or rule out this one!

Head studs, wow not exactly what I wanted to hear! ......So nobody thinks its something cheaper and less drastic such as the alternator or fan assembly? Clutch centre plate had also crossed my mind, I've seen the damper springs drop out on other non porsche models and cause a similar sound although it doesn't quite explain not being effected by the clutch position and I have to say I haven't seen the centre plate design on a 930 first hand!

Many thanks for your responses though, I'll let you know what I find as I rule each item out.

Start with a check up on the area in question, get someone to rev the car for you. You should be able to trace the fault, if you are at the rear of the engine area. It could be something silly which you may have overlooked?.

As we have old 911's we all think something major is wrong when we hear a new noise[:D] .

Goodluck

Thanks, have tried this but the sound is so loud with the engine lid open that I cannot decipher its source, other than it is coming from the engine/transmission assembly. Might sound strange but it sounds internal and is being transmitted through the engine casing!?

Unfortunately I've been a little busy with work, but have the chance to get the car up on a ramp next weekend. I'm hoping this will enable me to pin point the problem.

Thanks again.

Sorry, been snowed under at work!

I finally got the chance to get my head in the engine bay with a mate blipping the throttle, and the clack is actually a spit back through the intake manifold. I've know taken the dizzy off to give it an overhaul and check that all the timing advance mechanism are operating correctly and freely.

Hopefully this will solve the issue.
