Odd noise from my 993

Hi all,

I've had my 993 Targa a couple of months now and I've become aware of an odd noise that's only noticeable from within the car. The best way I can describe it is that it sort of sounds like someone's blowing bubbles though a straw into a can. Listening from outside (even with the engine cover up) it's impossible to hear this noise. It only seems to be present at idle and seems to dissipate when the engines warm (even at idle).

I'm going to take it to my local specialist on Monday to see if I'm worrying unduly. I'm hoping it's nothing more than something vibrating.

Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance.

I recently heard something similar, checked all the fluid levels and found my power steering/brake fluid very low (in fact off the dip stick for the small pot on the right hand side of the engine compartment). I'd seen no warning lights. There were no obvious leaks and it took only half a platic cup of brake fluid to top it up. No more gurgling noises, but I'm still baffled as to where the fluid went - apparently there will be slightly more taken up by the brake system as the pads wear.

Stewart,

You're joking, right??? As far as I'm aware, the power steering reservoir should be topped up with Dextron automatic transmission fluid - NOT brake fluid.

Wud nt hurt to look around the rubber gaiters at either end of ur steering rack ...........alternatively might be leak starting from from pump or pressure fed pipes , not far from reservoir in engine compartment.......................never found it evaporating in many years !
Whatever it is catching it early saves money ,like rack only not new pump etc ............

Darren, This is probably just the oil returning to the oil tank behind your drivers seat, assuming RHD. As you know the engine is dry sump and when cold you can hear the oil gurgling as it circulates. Not so audible when warm if at all Best regards Michael[:)]

Michael, you were absolutely right. I took the car to my local specialist & he said exactly the same, simply oil being returned to the tank. He even confirmed that it would be worse when cold.

This is my first 911, and what with the car being 8 years old I'm just unsure of what's normal & what's not.

So, panic over. [:)]

Thanks for all you replies.

Oops, as Dave pointed out I did actually mean automatic transmission fluid for the power steering bottle in the rear. I'd topped up the brake/clutch reservoir in the front a couple of days before that!
