Odd rhythmic squeeking noise

Hasan

My 05 997 C2S Cab has had a strange characteristic since I bought it back in May.

I'll do my best to describe it......When I'm driving at around 20 - 30 mph, there is a rhythmic squeeking noise that develops. It's not very loud at all, infact the noise can only be heard with the windows closed in the cabin and even then it's quite faint.
Other observations are that when I take it out of gear at 20-30 mph, the noise stops.

So I guess that rules out wheel bearings perhaps?....
It's not the brakes either as they are fairly new, plus if it was that, the noise would still be there when I take it out of gear.

Something from the gearbox?...Car was recently serviced in March, and has done 26k miles...

JZ checked it back in May and they found nothing obviously wrong.

Any suggestions?....

Is that a squeak or more like a clicking noise? I am getting a clicking noise at low speed on bumps, again quite quiet and it goes away at speed.

Well it could be interpreted as a clicking noise, but I would say it's more of a faint squeeking.

It's not related to bumps with me....and disappears when I take the car out of gear.

Having had a clutch cable problem many years ago, this sounds very familiar. I would suggest getting the clutch system checked very soon.

I am assuming that as Hassan indicated he put the car our of gear, its a manual.

If so I am afraid there is a clutch cable, it snapped on me in the Isle of Mann trip this year. The cable is integrated with the plastic bits at either end so if it goes, your stranded without another cable (not enough material left for a heath Robinson running repair).

Its a common problem with the 996 and Boxtser and apparently the part is a carry over from the 996.

You don't get much warning it squeaks a bit for a while and then lets go, normally if your parking up or starting off after a stop.

If its a tiptronic system I have no idea how they work but wouldn't be surprised to see a cable involved somewhere there as well.

Hi,

Yes it is indeed a manual, and this is definitely something I hadn't thought of.

I don't get a sound when depressing the clutch pedal, but you can start to hear it when the car goes over 15mph, it sounds like something needs lubricating!...a very rythmic squeeking noise that's not really related to speed...ie it doesn't get quicker as you go faster.

The clutch itself is very strong, but maybe I should change the clutch cable as a precaution..

If I take the car out of gear at 20mph for example, does that mean the clutch is no longer needed therefore the noise stops?

When you say the clutch is very strong, do you mean that the pedal is heavy? If so the clutch could be on the way out. As the heaviness is a gradual thing it's not an obvious problem until you take the car for a trade in price (you know where I'm heading...) and are informed that a new clutch is needed.

Anyway, sorry, this doesn't answer your original problem and as you said, it was serviced and checked recently.

Hope it's a cable only.

Unable to tell from your post if the squeak speeds up with engine revs or not, but if it does then suspect an engine belt.

There was a batch that produced a squeak.

A test would be to pour a small amount of talcum powder over the friction surfaces of the belt and see if that improves things.

This is NOT a wind up. I really mean talc. and it does work. [;)]

Let us know how you get on.

Regards,

Clive

When I said the clutch was strong, I mean it pulls away nicely.
I think there's alot of life left in the clutch so all good there.

So looks like I'll ask JZ to change the clutch cable and engine belt (They shouldn't be too expensive right?)

Clive, is this the main engine belt I can see when looking at the engine?
