Odometer not Working

The odometer on my 924 stopped working recently for no apparent reason; however the speedo still works.

The Haynes manual does not give any guidance.

Is the only way to fix it to remove the dash, then repair (or more likely) replace the speedo ?

Is there are any else to check before I under take this (and is this job better left to a porsche specialist you has probably changed may speedo?)

BTW, as far as I can make out a non-working odometer will not cause an MOT failure - can anything confirm this ? (I'm still going to fix it but it removes some of the urgency)

Thanks

John

This has very recently been covered by us "techno's" please refer to the 924 FAQ.

It is a requirement to record the vehhicles speed with an accuracy of not worse than a 10% error I believe. There is no requirement to record the vehicles mileage.

John is correct. There is no legal need for an odometer. On one of ,my 924's the odometer stopped at 90K miles and has not worked since and that was 7 years ago. I have a spare speedo head ready to fit but at the moment can't be bothered.

It is a shame you weren't at the Club Autojumble last Sunday as there was a working speedo head (with working odometer, for a Fiver (£5). Ok the bezel had been attacked by mice but it would be largely hidden when fitted.

Hi Geoff,
The odometers in both my 924 and 944 (series 1) went west at 90k-odd miles.I sent the 944`s back to makers ( VDO ) for a refurb (£90) it lasted a month longer than the warranty before it went again, so I bit the bullet and bought a new one via my local OPC (£200inc discount) they got it from Germany in 48 hours.I fitted it myself by removing the alloy-effect plastic surround and steering wheel (in opposite order). It helps if you push the speedo cable through the bulkhead from the engine bay to improve acccess to the back of the speedo.
I`ve since read that zeroing the tripmeter whilst moving is what breaks them in the first place.
regards,
jr.
