Odometer Problem

A pal of mine (who lives in Kuwait - no official OPC I believe) has a 993 Tiptronic. The odometer recently stopped at around 54000km; everything else works normally including the speedo and all the other indicator lights incorporated in it. They have tried other 993 units and the identical problem remains. The only work done to the car recently was a change of steering rack, after which the odo packed up. Coincidence, or has a sensor been disturbed perhaps? Can anyone help please.

If your brave enough the bits can be got from here;

http://www.odometergears.com/products/Porsche/911-993+94-98+%28Non-US%29/73

If your not brave;

Julian Reap or Speedy cables

At what mileage do they fail?
Bit poor really, parts of it only have to leap into action once every 100,000 miles, come on Porsche where's your reliability?[;)]

Thanks everyone - still tempted to give it a go, but I'll talk to Reap etc. first. If the price is right it won't be worth the hassle.

Cheers/John
