Odometer stuck

Hi all

I recently had a problem with my odometer - it froze at 165010. The speedo, however, worked fine. The speedo in my car only has an odometer dial - it does not have a tripmeter dial as this function is part of the OBC display in the tacho.

A little research turned-up odometer fix instructions.

A little more research turned-up Odometer Gears.

Success - after a couple of false starts.

Many thanks to Odometer Gears for their product and their help. I highly recommend having a go at doing this yourself - using a dial repairer would probably cost a few hundred, I would imagine, and a new one from Porsche is about £1000 + VAT.

A quick question - does anyone know if Porsche would clock the odometer with the last recorded mileage? Or would they install it at 000000 and simply stamp the service book with the last recorded mileage? I'm quite proud of the 165k my car's done and want to display this - she looks and performs great.

They install a new one with 000000 and stamp the service book with the mileage of the old odometer - done on my 993 Cab by the OPC some years ago.

Maybe you could do something for the technical articles area Matthew? Failing that perhaps Maurice could place this thread there?

Hi Clyde

I would like to and thanks for considering my efforts worthy - but I'm thinking I might just be duplicating the p-car instructions (the URL link is in my original post). Let me know if you think my input would be useful.

Incidentally, I am working on another project which may be of interest. The subject hasn't already been covered (not specifically for the C4S) to my knowledge. The problem is the lack of the backlight for the OBC in the tacho. The usual (therefore well documented) cause is a blown BS170 transistor but my tacho is a later version - the model usually discussed is 993 641 311 00 but mine is a 993 641 313 00 and does not have this transistor.

What appears to have happened is a small 'explosion' in the multi-layer PCB. Repair is well beyond my capabilities but I have had an offer of help from Tore Bergville which I will shortly be taking-up, though the shipping to Norway is of concern. I'll write things up once I've got it back from Tore.

If you followed the p-car walk through then there's possibly no point but I've found the p-car stuff is frequently a bit ott. For example the spoiler wall replacement guide tells you to remove the spoiler but this is not necessary. Did you find any shortcuts? One on how to get the tacho out without removing the steering wheel would be good :S

Good point ol' boy - you're on.

IMHO you are correct about the OTT bit - and the instructions are specifically for a speedo with both odometer and trip-meter - mine is sans trip-meter. So, seeing as it's you and it's a rainy day, I might just pull the speedo out one more time and take some photos to illustrate my story.

Taking out the tacho, however, is a different matter but articles on how to fix the broken OBC light give instructions on how to remove it without removing the steering wheel. That's a job for this weekend too, in preparation for shipping it to Norway. I have taken a photo of the front of the tacho which I have printed - I'm going to stick the cropped photo where the tacho sits so that I don't miss it too much while it's away for repair [:)].
