Recently spotted that my odometer and trip counter have stopped working. I'm told it's a plastic cog in the speedo that has given up and I found a guide on Clarkes Garage to get to the thing. Question is where to buy the actual cog from? Is it best to go to my local Porsche dealer for this? Car is used (almost) every day so dont want to strip out the dash and then wait weeks for a tiny bit of plastic to find it's way to me.

Hi

Not sure if they are available in the UK... mind you i didn't try an OPC so by all means try there first....you can get them off eBay from the states, not cheap though when adding P+P and import duty. This is where i got mine from http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Porsche-944-951-Speedometer-Odometer-Gear-For-1985-5-1990-VDO-MPH-/171850423833? took a couple of weeks to arrive not helped by the post office this end blocking the parcel until the import was paid, that added about 5 days in the equation, £3+ for the import duty with a further £8 for the post office handling charge...talk about a rip off...lol.
My car is also an 86 so this gear should be the right one for you, there is another type available but evidently the one listed here fits most cars, in fact 99% is stated.

Got mine from the US, it only took a few days. You'll need to disassemble to double check the correct number of teeth unfortunately.
