Off to Holland in the 951, what should I take?

Afternoon all,

I am off to Holland with R24 in April.

I`ll be going over the car with a fine tooth comb but I also realise that I will I need to carry spares (some are compulsory).

How do you get to the headlamp bulbs as I need to identify the type and make sure I`ve got spares.

Do Halfrauds headlamp blanking off kits cover 944`s or is it an OPC visit?

Apart from a DME relay, a small toolkit and fuses what else should I take?

I`ve blown up my collapsible spare (the original compressor works [8D]) and it seems to hold ok over a number of days [edited to say that it is 18 years old [&:]] BUT would y`all recommend going without a proper spare wheel/tyre? (BTW I`ve got tyre foam)

Headlamp bulbs are standard H4, and you get to them by undoing the three pod cover screws and carefully levering them off.

I've just replaced mine with Osram Silverstars for a piffling £13 delivered to my door. Notably brighter FWIW.
 
do you mean the beam convertors? Halfrauds will do fine. Get the yellowy transparent ones as they'll let a little light through (whereas a bit of stickyback black plastic will take a lot of your beam away!)

Don't forget your (IIRC, compulsory) first aid kit and warning triangle. Other than that, have a look through the old "glovebox" thread for what to carry spareswise, and just take a few handtools "just in case". Oh, and an RAC card!

European Recovery - can cost lots of money to repatriate vehicle - and look out for small print re cars over 10yrs old. If you do a few trips to Europe, particularly in older cars, first pay £25 to join 'Camping & Caravanning Club' 'cos they have a special deal with RAC called 'Arrival' that gives you full annual European cover for any vehicle, any age. Obviously membership card is an embarrassment socially but just keep it hidden 'till needed. Also take warning triangle and list of Dutch OPC's. Are you on a limited mileage classic insurance? Bizzarely, mine doesn't count o'seas miles into annual total if you give them an estimate (!!) in advance and pay a small admin fee - can be useful to pop across the channel each year for a few thousand miles as 5k approaches [;)].

Norton Insurance - £337 annual cost for incl at home, UK and abroad recovery, agreed value, 3000 miles and track day cover as long as its PCGB organised.

V interesting comment re where the mileage is done though, I'll ask them.

Funny enough although its covered abroad I have to tell them when I`m taking it, why is this? What difference does it make?
 
most euro cover policies i've had will allow you to go 90 days at a time only, so they need a start date to know when they are going to try and wriggle out of something.....

Some nylon tie-wraps, WD 40, warning triangle, fluorescent waistcoat. disposable gloves (you always breakdown when you need to stay clean).

Don't forget to hide your radar detector if you have one.

Radar detectors were legal in Holland a couple of years ago - not sure of the policy now

I know they are a big no-no in France

You also need to be carefull of the cameras that monitor your driving style - vehicle too close etc - these are the blue squares mounted over the motorways

Where are you going in Holland?

Nice - what times of the day are you travelling - the jams around Holland can be a nightmare if you are driving at peak times (any time after 6am ..)

Another thing that I carry (in all the cars) is a carpet square (600 x 600 - thats 2ft square in English money). The ones i have are bitumen backed (B&Q) so they are waterproof. Ideal if you have to change a tyre, something clean to kneel, sit on. Low on space requirements too.[:)]

Dunno really, ferry out is mid morning so possible late arrival, ferry home is late in afternoon so probably no issue....we`ll see.
