Offical Porsche Screen Wash

I was given some of this (I don't think I'd have paid the price myself...), anyway - anyone know if it's supposed to avoid freezing?

Nothing on the bottle actually suggests it is supposed to - but that makes it pretty useless (and for the price you'd expect it to do that....)

Anyway, if mixed according to the instructions it does freeze. Not sure what the temperature was yesterday here on the west coast, but it was well under zero but not Alaskan). Heated nozzles worked well (after 10 mins of driving the nozzles and surrounding bonnet area were defrosted) - but I got no sound or water from the system until several hours later in the day - had to keep stopping to manually clean screen - so I think pump was frozen up.

Think I'll get some cheap halfrauds stuff ...that might work...

Mark,

I have a bottle of the screenwash in my garage which I came with the car, it is identical to one which I purchased from 'Frosts' called 'Dr Wack' which stated on the bottle that it did not contain any anti-frezze components. The anti-freeze apparently needs to be added by using another consumer screenwash containing anti-freeze properties

Thanks for the info - although I think I'll empty the tank of this "Official" stuff first because the bottle says "don't mix with other products" - which I'd normally read as marketing-speak, but last summer my indy topped the washer system up with something different and it turn the system content into something resembling scrambled egg whites - and blocked up my nozzles, if you know what I mean[:(]

I had a similar experience with my 944. Whatever I used and whatever the indy used didn't work well - the nozzles still worked but it looked like they were squirting the product of a heavy cold...[:'(]

Mark,

I think most of the screenwash products use iso-propyl-alcochol (IPA) as the anti-freeze component. You should be able to purchase some from your local chemist although as you suggest it may be easier to change what's in there already

I had not realised that some of the screenwash solutions were not compatable with each other! I't may be to do with the surfactants that some of producers are now using rather than the more tradditional compounds.

So that leads us to the question of what is the most effective screen cleaner additive?

Best not to mix screen wash products. As said above, they can turn to gel.

In the worst case it can require removal of the washer bottle, flushing out, and the replacement of the electric motor, pipework and washer heads.

Audi used a product a few years ago that wasn't compatible with some others and it caused such problems.

Why not go to a VW Group dealer and buy some there. Quality will be correct and it says on the pack "Frost protection to -70*C" That should be good enough for the UK!
