Oh Bloody Hell!

Right - any ideas?

Engine on my 86 2.5 at idle overheats after 5 or so mins - but under normal driving (say a steady 60) the temp needle drops to coldest setting? There is a whining noise from the front of the engine too. Now does this mean I need a new waterpump - or is my thermostat buggered?

Also - im getting a grinding noise at about 1500 to 2000 revs from the gear box. Are we talking replacement here? And if so - as anyone any idea how much it might cost?

Cheers for any help

This could be a simple thing, or possibly a major thing so don't just take my word for it, get it checked by a specialist. [&:]

The simple thing is it could be the switch in the radiator that should switch the fan on when it gets too hot, did you lift the bonnet when overheating to see if the fan was running? This is a common failure.

The water pump is at the front of the engine on the left hand side and is driven by the belts, it is also a common wear and tear item and if it has siezed then it will be dragging on the belts, so v.important to get it fixed before they get injured too. Of course, your noise could be something completely different [:)]

The first thing (and cheapest [:D] ) to try with the gearbox is a fresh change of oil. The oil should be changed every 4 years or 48k miles, but when I was looking for my car it was amazing the number that have never had this done [] Gearboxes are known to whine a bit and then wear out, who knows if this is down to lack of frequent oil changes. Because it's a known weak point I have mine changed every two years. I'd rather spend £20 on lovely clean oil than ££££'s on a rebuild

NO WAY [][][]

They will never be for sale [:D]

I'll have to go out and give them a good thrashing now just to calm them down. Loose talk costs lives you know

A word of warning!! If you suspect your water pump, don't run the car! If the water pump seizes it will snap the cam belt, and bend all your valves.... believe me I know[]. Have your car collected.
